A “rainbow baby” is a baby that is born following a miscarriage, stillbirth or infant loss.
A beautiful and bright rainbow follows a storm and gives hope of things getting better. The rainbow is more appreciated having just experienced the storm in comparison.
Wendy & Nic have been trying for a baby for two and a half years, they have gone through five rounds of IVF. After the first round of IVF in 2015 Wendy and Nic fell pregnant, however, sadly Wendy miscarried after 5 weeks.
On the fifth round of IVF Wendy & Nic were extremely happy to find that they were pregnant, announcing the pregnancy to family and friends on the 23rd of December that they were over the moon.
Sadly Wendy & Nic lost their beauiful little boy at 20 weeks.
Wendy and I regret to tell you that on Wednesday night, she was rushed in an ambulance to hospital. Wendy was in extreme agony and having cramping that made it impossible to speak to her on the phone. I had just finished work minutes before her calling.
When I met her at St. John of god, they told us she was going into labour and fully dilated. The midwifes couldn't stop it, and she was going to give birth. Wendy was in a lot of pain, but her health was also in danger. They g...ave her oxytocin to speed up her contractions, and at 11.27pm she gave birth to our beautiful sleeping baby boy, Billy Nicholas Syme.
Billy was too little to survive, he was only 20 weeks old. He had perfect little hands and feet, and we love him so much. We said goodnight to him on Friday, but we didn't say goodbye. The pastor said a prayer for him, and he looked so peaceful when we laid him to rest.
We are beyond devastated and just can't stop thinking about him. Life can be so cruel sometimes. We tried for 2 and a half years to create our beautiful son, and for this to happen is unimaginable. I'm so proud of Wendy for looking after her body the way she did throughout the pregnancy, she hardly trained besides some yoga, worked part time, ate really healthy, and listened to her body. It just wasn't meant to be.
This is the hardest thing we have ever experienced, but we still have so much love for our son and always will. We are so grateful that Wendy's health is ok, and I couldn't be more proud of how she handled the most horrific situation.
We are so grateful we have each other and our families during this horrendous time. The love we have been shown is just amazing and we really appreciate it. Len (Wendy's Dad) is looking after our Billy now.
Although we preferred keeping this off Facebook, considering our previous post announcing Wendy's pregnancy and a lot of people knowing, we decided it would save us a lot of grief letting everyone know on here. We need time to recover and will never forget our Billy.

Wendy & Nic have spent $30,000 on IVF treatments, they are still paying of the last $5000, and once recovered, their obstretician has given them hope for a healthy pregnancy, they are hopeful to try one last time for the baby they so badly want to raise and cherish those extremely special moments with!
Each round of IVF costs $9000, which is why we have set the goal so high, but any amount would be extremely helpful, if you can find it in your hearts to help towards their dreams of having a "rainbow baby" it would be forever appriciated!
The storm (pregnancy loss) has already happened and nothing can change that experience. Storm-clouds might still be overhead as Wendy & Nic continue to cope with the loss of beautiful Billy , but they have hope that something colourful and bright can emerge after this tragedy.
