Welcoming New Mainers

UPDATE: Because of the enormous outpouring of generosity by folks like you, I have increased my goal to $2000. On Friday, I will close this campaign. All funds raised will be withdrawn by me. We will use some of these funds for shoes, as described below, and the family will receive the rest. The money raised will go a long way in supporting this lovely family. Again, on behalf of Valentin and his family (who don't yet  know this campaign exists), I thank you.

Valentin, Juliana and their 3 beautiful children (Arielle age 2, Blessing age 4, John age 10) have recently arrived from Angola, seeking asylum in U.S. To get here, they travelled for months by foot and bus, through South America. They lived in an emergency shelter in Portland for 6 weeks, before moving in with us. They will soon be moving on to Freeport, where they will continue to learn English, enroll in school, and continue their quest for a better life. They are gentle, kind, and hard working.  If given a chance, I believe they will make a meaningful impact on our community.

I am raising funds on their behalf for the following items:

1. Shoes. They currently only have  flip flops, and with the Maine autumn approaching, I would like them to each get a new pair of warm, sturdy shoes from our local shoe store, Lamey Wellahan.

2. Any funds left over will be given to the family to be used at their discretion - for legal fees, medical bills, supplies - whatever they see fit.

Thank you for your love and support,

London
