Second Mile Walk for the Homeless

Donation protected
My name is Dean Workman from Chesapeake, Virginia and I am raising money to deliver hope to the homeless on Christmas. The money that is raised will be used to fill Christmas stockings to deliver to the homeless located in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I started this event 6 years ago and it has been a growing passion of mine ever since. I am hoping to spread the word on this significant cause to spread joy to as many homeless people as possible. Please read my story below to see how you can make an impact in someone's life who really needs it.

At 11am on December 24th 2014, 7 middle school kids and 3 dads loaded 24 Christmas stockings each filled with a beanie and matching gloves, a toothbrush kit, cough drops, Christmas candy, other Christmas cheer, a flashlight, and a small Bible with a note on the inside cover that said Never, Never, Never Give Up written by our youth. There was a $25 in cash used as a bookmarker next to a scripture about hope.

The JOY Group piled into 2 cars and headed to the streets surrounding the Judeo Christian Outreach Center in Virginia Beach for the 2nd Mile Christmas Stocking Walk for the Homeless. The adults were wondering if we would find any people due to the heavy rain, but the truth is there was no couch to snuggle up on next to a Christmas tree. These streets were their home, wet or dry. This Christmas Eve our young boys and girls were Angels of God. They were Christmas miracles. They delivered joy and hope were there was none. If you don't believe in Christmas miracles, go walk the streets near the Judeo Christian Outreach Shelter and ask those who witnessed a Christmas miracle. Ask our youth how they felt when there were standing in the rain and witness an elderly homeless woman begin to cry and thanking Jesus when she received her stocking. She told the kids they were her Angel. I have to believe these are moments our youth will never forget.

December of 2009 I started this tradition with my children, Payton and Curran. Payton was 8 and Curran was 4. The first year we gave out 11 stockings and we were all touched so deeply and have continued the 2nd Mile Christmas Stocking Walk for the Homeless every year since. Last year we grew the event by opening it up to the JOY Group at St. Thomas. We were able to touch 24 homeless people with stockings. This year we will be providing 105 Christmas stockings to the 109 homeless people that are fed lunch at the Judeo Christian Outreach Shelter in Virginia Beach on Christmas Eve. We will have new churches along with corporate sponsors helping us achieve our goal this year.

Please join me along with St. Thomas JOY Middle School Group and a lot of elementary, middle school, and high school youth bring hope to 105 individuals who are at their lowest point. This act of kindness may give them the hope they need to make this a turning point in their life. I can tell you with certainty that if you decide to participate you will never be the same person. You too will witness a Christmas miracle this year.

We are looking to raise $9,000 to make 105 stockings for the homeless. This money will also be used to give 3 churches outside of Virginia the resources needed to start their Christmas Stocking Walk for the Homeless in 2016.  Please see the photo below for more information and a picture of the stocking that is given to the homeless. I appreciate you taking the time to read this and I encourage you to give any amount you can. Every amount will make a difference in a person's life and can be the hope someone needs to never give up.
