Save Terre Haute's Harmony Hall

$11,525 of $10,000 goal

Raised by 100 people in 42 months
Harmony Hall, originally a mortuary with an underground tunnel that housed horse-drawn hearses and cadavers, was built in the 1930s in Historic 12 Points in Terre Haute, IN, and it has been home to the Terre Haute Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, the Banks of the Wabash Chorus, for the past 30 years.  Upon purchasing Harmony Hall, at the time called Garfield Theatre, in 1985 for approximately $140,000, the Banks of the Wabash Chorus took to remodeling the rundown theatre and putting it back in working condition by building a stage, replacing seating, removing moldy draperies, and so much more.  Since its renovation, Harmony Hall has been used by churches, local theatre groups such as Terre Haute Children’s Theatre, a female barbershop chorus, and every weekly rehearsal and roughly 90 shows presented by the Banks of the Wabash.

Over the past 30 years, the Banks of the Wabash Chorus has had its ups and downs from difficulty with finances to drops in membership.  Today, the Banks of the Wabash Chorus, once a 60 man chorus with multiple international appearances, is a 12 man chorus facing its worst financial hardship since purchasing Harmony Hall, and the Chorus is, unfortunately, facing the possibility of losing their home for good as their bank has started the foreclosure process.

As it currently stands, out of the original $140,000 mortgage taken out for the purchase, the Chorus currently owes approximately $6,000 to finish paying off the mortgage with $3,000 in back bills and fees to have utilities turned back on.  Overall, it will take approximately $10,000 to get Harmony Hall back on its feet.  The Chorus has already taken steps to make sure Harmony Hall can sustain itself by finding several long term renters for the Hall, but the Chorus is having trouble raising the $10,000 it will take to get the bills paid off.  So, we are asking you, our friends, family, fellow Barbershoppers and music lovers, and complete strangers, to help us by donating anything you can to help the Banks of the Wabash keep their home where memories and friendships have been made for 30 years and where they want to keep making memories and friendships for years to come.

Good afternoon everyone. I figure you are all wondering what is going on with us, so here is an update. We are over $9,000!!! Again, we'd like to thank everyone who has donated to our campaign. It really does our hearts good to see so many people come together to show their support.

Now, you may be wondering a few things. First, you are probably wondering where your donations have gone thus far. Thus far, we have been able to stop the foreclosure process and pay what we owe on the utilities. We have not been able to pay off the mortgage or reopen the doors just yet, but are still working towards getting to that point.

The second thing you may be wondering is what will happen when we reopen the doors to Harmony Hall and are we ever going to face this problem again? The answer is no. We have a few long term renters interested in using the Hall as soon as we reopen the doors as well as some people who are looking to use the Hall for the short term throughout the year. So, we will have a way to sustain the Hall to keep us from getting in this situation again.

Finally, you may be wondering what happens once we reach our goal and what's next? Once we reach our goal, we will for sure be reopening the doors to Harmony Hall and begin cleaning it up to be ready to rent. Our next step will be repairing and upgrading the Hall. For those who didn't know, Harmony Hall is in need of some repair and upgrading. Therefore, it is our hope that people will continue to share this campaign and encourage people to donate as we continue to work on our next step of repairing and upgrading the Hall. We have overcome the greatest hurdle by retaining ownership, but there is still some work to be done.

Again, a big thank you to everyone who has donated thus far and those who continue to share this campaign and our need for support. As always, Keep the Whole World Singing!!!

Good evening everyone. Just a quick update about what all has been happening since our last update. We have reached the half way point of our goal, and we were able to pay the bank what we owe for the mortgage to stop the foreclosure process as well as pay off what we owe on all our utilities. However, we are still not able to turn anything back on or reopen the doors just yet. There are also a few developments taking place that I won't reveal at this time as details are still being hammered out, but I will let you know when everything is ready to go. Again, I'd like to thank everyone who has donated up to this point. It really means more to us than you could imagine. Please keep spreading the word and encouraging people to donate, and as always, Keep the Whole World Singing!

I just want to take a minute and thank everyone who donated and shared this thus far. You have no idea how much this means to me and the Banks of the Wabash Chorus. We have raised a lot of money thus far, but we still have a long way to go. So, please continue to share this and encourage people to donate. Recently, a few members were contacted by the local newspaper, the Tribune Star, and they ran an article about the campaign. I have posted the link below. Thank you again for your support, and as always, Keep the Whole World Singing!

The hall and more importantly the BOW have shared so much with me. It was the site of the first Keep 'Em Guessin' rehearsal and show. KEG had a lot of fun in that hall. Rip Chord has just as many memories. The Hall is such a great place...can't wait until you get-er-done!
