Vwaza Wildlife Reserve Rangers Fund

Hi, my name is Isaac Garnet Phephelu and I am a ranger for the Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve.  We are part of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife In Malawi, Africa. Like any other rangers in Malawi they are hard working and dedicated to protecting all wildlife including elephants. Due to their hardworking spirit they have reduced poaching and deaths on elephants and other animals. Despite all these efforts, the rangers are facing numerous problems in conducting patrols. Working in unfavorable environment, lacking many field equipment, facing armed poachers, they really risk their lives for the love of animals. Many problems are;

LACK OF PATROLLING BOOTS.  This is one of big problems that many rangers are facing, patrolling even in thorny bushes with torn out boots sometimes using civilian shoes patrolling even during the night. One pair of patrolling boots costs $50USD for 50 rangers.

LACK OF TENTS- As rangers spend most of days and nights in the bush patrolling, tents are very important. But this is not the case, few torn-out tents that leak during the rainy season making it hard for the rangers, even worse if it rains during the night. One 2-man tent costs $90USD for 50 rangers.

LACK OF SLEEPING BAGS- After hard work rangers need to rest and they cannot carry blankets but sleeping bag. Only few have sleeping bags. One sleeping bag costs $70USD for 50 rangers.

RAIN SUITS – Only few rangers have rain suits so when it is raining rangers get soaked. One rain suits costs $30USD for 50 rangers.

Other items we are lacking are Army Dixies, water bottles, camouflage uniform and weather jackets.

IN SUMMARY: We have 50 Rangers out here risking their lives day in and day out to protect our wildlife.
Rangers with good equipment work effectively and are motivated, therefore any small donation to rangers means more animals shall be saved because rangers will work hard with enough field gear in patrolling wildlife reserves.

Thank you for support and if you have any questions please contact either of us.

Hi guys! Here's Isaac's update on the house renovations. Isaac has installed new windows and mesh wire for mosquito prevention & the painting is now finished (I've attached a short video of the progress). It looks so much better and now we are onto the solar panels.

We are still looking for donations for the solar panels. We need $758USD for solar panels, big battery & inverter. I would still like to build a well so he doesn't have to travel miles to fetch water from the village borehole (if we raise enough funds). A well will cost approximately $800-$1000USD for the trenching and the pump.

Please consider a donation as he has given so much to protect our wildlife and we need to make sure his living conditions are not so deplorable.

Thank you to all our supporters, past, present & future. Isaac is so grateful for each and every one of you.

Hi guys! Just a quick update on the house renovations. Isaac has installed new windows and mesh wire for mosquito prevention. He's working on painting next!

Donations for this project are $730 to date after fees so we are still looking for donations in order to make this house inhabitable for Isaac. We need $700USD for solar panels & batteries and I would like to build a well so he doesn't have to travel miles to fetch water from the village borehole (if we raise enough funds). Hi guys! As most of you are aware, Isaac is being relocated to the village from the camp. This is a dilapidated house with no electricity or running water. This is a disgrace to have our Rangers live in these deplorable conditions in Malawi.

In order to make this house inhabitable for Isaac we will need $600USD for repairs to the existing structure, $700USD for solar panels & batteries and I would like to build a well so he doesn't have to travel miles to fetch water from the village borehole (if we raise enough funds). A well will cost approximately $800-$1000USD for the trenching and the pump.
