Children for Peace

Donation protected
April 2014 will forever remain a month marred by yet another man-made tragedy in Ukrainian history: the beginning of an invasion by Russia, and an ongoing war that persists to the present day. This war has already taken the lives of 6,832 people, and that number is growing every single day. Those who died in this conflict gave their lives for the future of their children, in the hopes that they would live in a free and democratically governed country in the years to come. If you want to ensure that their sacrifice was not in vain, please, help us to implement a new project called "Children for Peace".  The project is being operated under the auspices of St. John’s Institute with the support of its staff and physical facilities.

The mission of "Children for Peace" is to support a group of approximately 20 children of those who took part in fighting for Ukraine – some left orphaned - by bringing them to Canada for one month, to participate in leadership training.  The war has been tragic for many, many families; however, children who lost parents are suffering the most.   According to today’s statistics, approximately 1,286 children in Ukraine have been left without a mother or father due to the war. These children will grow up in complicated economic and social conditions, without a parent to guide them.  Their future is extremely uncertain. They need our support to see what a democratic country can mean for them.  They can benefit greatly from exposure to the Canadian way of life and to the lifelong contacts they can make with families in Canada.

Objective

Support children (including orphans) of soldiers of anti-terror operation (ATO) who fight for Ukraine by bringing a group of youths to Canada to:
·      participate in leadership training,
·      learn English,
·      get acquainted with the historical activity of Ukrainian-Canadian settlers and farmers.

 Overview

The group of approximately 20 children of ATO soldiers (13-16 years old) will come to Edmonton in late June 2016. The duration of their stay in Canada will be one month. Youths will be hosted by Canadian families and will participate in:
·         Junior Interpreter’s Program provided by Friends of Ukrainian Village Society at  the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Site,
·         Educational Program provided by St.John`s Institute,
·         Summer camp offered by Plast – Ukrainian Youth Association of Canada,
·         Leadership training delivered by members of the Ukrainian community in Edmonton.

Criteria for success

The project will be considered successful if children:
·         Create a bond with their host family and keep the contact for years,
·         Grow knowledge about Ukrainian community around the world,
·         Discover opportunities to use the obtained skills in their life in Ukraine,
·         Learn more about democratic society and the ability to build it.
