The Los Tuxtlas region in Mexico is an area which still holds important remnants of tropical rainforest and cloud forest which are home to a high biodiversity; however, these ecosystems are endangered by illegal hunting and logging and the expansion of pastures for cattle ranching. The project Selva de Los Colibries aims at consolidating ecotourism in the community Ruiz Cortines in the heart of Los Tuxtlas, in order to provide a sustainable income to people involved in the conservation of this natural treasure. This will be carried out through different projects, like the construction of visitor huts and the establishment of a visitor trail.
I have been working with ecotourism and conservation in Los Tuxtlas since 2012, first as a Master´s thesis project in Sustainable Urban and Regional Development at the University of Graz, and then as a member of local NGOs and as a doctoral candidate in geography at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). I have got involved with Selva de los Colibries as I see a great potential in this project of contributing significantly to the conservation of the forests around Ruiz Cortines and of becoming a model which can be followed in other places. This is due to the great dedication of its participants to environmental conservation and also their experiences and renown as nature tour guides. Therefore, I am happy to present to you this video and invite you to support this project. The more support we get, the more impact we can make for conservation as well as social development in the region!
It is important to point out, that the donations to this GoFundMe campaign are regarded as voluntary gifts and are not tied to any service in return. They will be received on a private bank account and are not tax-deductible.
