Chance is an 8 year old boxer cross shar pei who has had a hard, neglected existence and one that has been filled with misery and suffering, that just became his way of life.  He was found wandering in the north western suburbs of Melbourne one night and though hungry and scared, still trusted enough in humans to allow himself to be rescued by a passer-by, a very concerned woman who only wanted him safe and off a busy road.

Chance is micro-chipped and his owners were contacted but they never bothered to collect him.  Why bother spending money on claiming an older dog that was never looked after in the first place and had long term medical issues bought on by years of neglect.

A rescue group had placed a save on him within the first week of him being in the Lost Dogs Home, but never collected him as his health issues were just too big and expensive a challenge to deal with, so yet again he was abandoned and soon to be on “the list.” Chance’s lifeline lay in his finder, who knew a friend who volunteered with a rescue group and word of his plight spread through the rescue community.  Ethical rescue stepped up, as Golden Oldies Animal Rescue could not leave this gentle old soul to a system that would put him to sleep.  He certainly deserves a chance to be a loved family pet living in comfort.

The health issues that are affecting Chance’s quality of life are all treatable, but these issues are currently stopping him from shining and enjoying life as a happy healthy dog.

He has a very sensitive diet requirement and you can see from the pictures taken when he arrived at The Lost Dogs Home that he has severe chronic skin allergies which have lichenified and hyper pigmented his skin on his rump, tummy, ears and more.  It feels like leather to the touch and is very uncomfortable for him. He is forever scratching, to the point where he draws blood in an attempt to relieve the discomfort.  It is just heart breaking to see him scratching continuously.

Chance also suffers from severe Otitis Externa, which has caused a thickening of his ear canal and ear flaps.  The bacteria growing in his inner ear is so bad, that the smell is indescribable and distressing.  If left untreated he would need an ear canal ablation (removal of his ear canal), with the real possibility of leaving him mostly deaf.  We are aiming to prevent that from happening, with a method of management and treatment.  Our amazing vet knows it should be successful, but it will need expensive medication and constant visits to see him for monitoring and management.

To give Chance a real quality of life, we need funds to be able to maintain his Vet and Naturopathy treatments. Weekly baths and all the medication and supplements that will be necessary to get this beautiful gentle giant smiling, not scratching and enjoying a life without pain and suffering.

Please donate, share and help us give Chance a quality of life he has never had and very much deserves.
