Alum Rock Village Community Mural

Donation protected
We LOVE LOVE LOVE our mural and it has made such a difference in our neighborhood. We've experienced no graffti in our Village area as well as a greater sense of community and vibrancy since the mural started. We also have been able to bring the high school kids out of their shells and contribute positively to their neighborhood...that's definitely a win-win-win!

The mural was funded in-part by the city programs Viva Calle and BeautifySj. However, there is a last leg of the project that needs your help!

Carlos, our visionary muralist, was out at the site typically 5 days a week for the last month working with our high school kids - teaching them how to paint, helping raise their confidence in themselves and their neighborhood, and just putting in so much love and vision into the art and our neighborhood.

We're looking for your support in completing the funding for the work thus far AND to add a layer of anti-graffti coating onto the mural to help protect it's beauty and longevity.  This coat will help protect the art from any long-term damage caused by graffiti, normal wear-and-tear, and sun exposure.

The support would mean so much to us and to our community.

We would be so grateful to be able to complete this mural with the proper coating and protection it deserves - we'd love for it to continue to enrich our Alum Rock Village area for many generations to come.

Please help us raise the funds to complete this project!

The mural not only holds the rich history of San Jose but it also tells a story of the power of togetherness, community, vision, growth, and what is possible when a small group of people are inspired and get into action.

We are Alum Rock Village Action Committee and we are proud to be able to serve our community and bring safety, beauty, and vibrancy back to this neighborhood. We truly believe in the power of "It takes a Village"....

We are so grateful for all your contributions towards making this one dream on the long list of dreams come to a completion.

Thank You!

We are a group of passionate neighbors and changemakers living  in the Alum Rock Foothills area.

Last year a tragic event, the killing of an elderly woman in our neighborhood, became the catalyst for the forming of a neighborhood group and much-needed, long-awaited change to begin.

Many of us were shaken up by this event and decided enough was enough, we were done with being okay with the way things were and the stigma of living on the east side of San Jose - we wanted to live in a community that felt safer, cleaner, more connected, and more vibrant.

Also, all of us believe deeply in our hearts that there is much beauty and potential in our area
underneath the layers and years of neglect, complacency, and stereotyping.

In the last year we have diligently worked on various projects that are slowly but steadily bringing us towards our goals: litter pickup events, reconnection with local schools and businesses - forming stronger alliances for beautification and safety, as well as partnering with the City, County, and law enforcement.

Our biggest accomplishment to date is a beautiful new mural on the southeast corner of Alum Rock Ave. and White Rd. This mural is a collaborative effort between our neighborhood group, city programs: Viva Calle & BeautifySJ, James Lick High School art students, and the artist himself, Carlos Rodriguez.

The mural represents the rich and colorful history of our area and San Jose.

Did you know that at one time San Jose was named "The Valley of the Heart's Delight"? San Jose was state's go-to city for fruits and veggies! You can see that represented in our mural with the beautiful hands holding the abundance of fruit.

Also in our mural we've included the James Lick Observatory, the trolley that once ran up and down Alum Rock Ave. from downtown - transporting folks to Alum Rock Park, and some other items that are particular to our neighborhood.

The mural not only holds the rich history of San Jose but it also tells a story of the power of togetherness, community, vision, growth, and what is possible when a small group of people are inspired and get into acton.

We are Alum Rock Village Action Committee and we are proud to be able to serve our community and bring safety, beauty, and vibrancy back to this neighborhood. We truly believe the power of "It takes a Village"....

We are so grateful for all your contributions to making this one dream on the long list of dreams to come to a completion.

Thank You!
