Bee the Change
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Kira Thorne and I am working on my Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can win. For my award, I chose to tackle the steady decline of bees around the world, especially in the UK.
Since 2010, there has been a 45% decline in the number of bees in the UK and a 40% decrease in the US since 2006. Bees are vital to a stable economy and environment as the vast majority of foods human consume relies on insect pollination. Without the pollination of bees, 75% of crops would suffer in production significantly including apples, strawberries, tomatoes, and almonds.
While many people are taking action, there is still much more that needs to be done. I hope with my project I not only raise awareness about the decline of our buzzy friends, but also inspire others to take action and do their part.
I plan on creating a garden, website, and handouts to raise awareness about the decline of bees and teach others about what they can do to help. My expected costs are $250: for wood, nails and screws, seeds and plants, as well as printing supplies.
Any donation will assist in this project while allowing a girl the experience to take action in our community. Thank you so much for your support!
Thank you!
-Kira
