Disclaimer - I do not claim to be an expert on this heartbreaking situation.  I am merely a proud Texan who is living and working in Budapest.  I am an observer who is trying to find a small way to help and invite you to join.

This request goes out to any friends and family who might be interested in supporting the refugees currently in Budapest.   These people are mainly from Syria and are fleeing a war torn country by way of various European countries.  Thousands have been in Budapest for weeks now, waiting to travel on to their next destination.  The living conditions are dire; sleeping on the ground outside train stations with no real hygenic facilities and not enough food.   There are many families and hundreds of children.  There are very few ways to travel onward, besides the trains which are infrequent and are often stopped at borders and emptied, or other dangerous methods which can result in death.  Tensions, as you can expect, are mounting daily.

Local support efforts are in place, but the needs exceed what is out there.  Donations of food and basic supplies are appreciated and we are able to deliver them ourselves or get them to people that have the means to deliver them.

If you make a donation, it will go towards people purchasing apples, bananas, supplies for sandwiches, shoes, basic toiletries, mats to sleep on, and whatever else is needed.  We are simply individuals living and working in the wonderful city of Budapest who are trying to help.  Nothing fancy right now.   Just the basics.

Beyond this, we are not sure.  The situation seems to change on a daily basis.  Many have asked me how they can help, so I thought I'd set this up and see what happens.

Your support through prayers or donations is appreciated and I will report about how things are being used.

Thanks in advance -

Shawn

We wanted to say one last thank you before we close our GoFundMe page. Your collective kindness has been the reassurance that there is so much good in the world.

Despite differences in beliefs, political affiliations, or your thoughts on the global impact of current events, you have chosen to help another human who was in need.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO DONATE FURTHER, PLEASE CONSIDER ONE OF THESE ORGANIZATIONS THAT WE ARE SUPPORTING;

Hungarian Helsinki Committee - http://helsinki.hu/en/
This group is providing legal aid to help refugees as they move through the asylum legal process. This will become a much greater need once the border between Hungary and Serbia is closed this week. Refugees will have a very small window of time to apply for asylum, or will be sent back to Serbia. Many lawyers are needed to help process the thousands of refugees in need!!!

Hungarian Maltese Charity Service - http://www.helps-project.eu/partners/39-hungarian-maltese-charity-service-hu
This group is present in various locations and is providing medical assistance right on site where refugees are in need.

Budapest-Bamako SOS Refugee Organization - http://www.gofundme.com/sosrefugee
This group is providing assistance of all kinds and we have volunteered with them recently at the border of Serbia where they have a medical tent as well as providing basic supplies.

Thank you once again for your kindness -

Hello wonderful donors ~

Here is an update about how your donations are making a difference;
+ Basic supplies are continually being bought as needs arise. These include food and drinks, socks and shoes, blankets, strollers, and backpacks.
+ Train tickets purchased for those moving on to Austria and beyond.
+ We are using your donations to support and volunteer with organizations that are helping on a larger scale...please see below.

We will continue to volunteer and will use our funds to support these groups, but we think that working through and with organizations that have a true understanding of where needs are is a wise choice.

Unfortunately, this is a problem that doesn't seem to be going away any time soon. It changes day to day, seemingly minute by minute sometimes. Your generosity has been overwhelming and proof that there is so much good in the world.

Please consider supporting one of the organizations mentioned above, or any other that you trust!!

Blessings to each of you ~

Continued thanks for your support!

We have a wonderful TEAM of 30+ people here in Budapest who are planning, purchasing, delivering, and evaluating the best next steps to take with your support.

What are we doing? Well, every day is different. What was needed on Friday night at 10:00pm was no longer needed on Saturday morning at 9:00am. We are doing our best to keep up!

After meeting this morning, the Team has decided to use your support in the following ways;
+ Basic supplies - shoes, socks, baby wipes, food, suit cases, tents, strollers, mats, and even some Gummy Bears!
+ We are going to support a local team of doctors and assistants who are giving medical attention as needed along the route and at the train stations. They are called Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta.
+ We are purchasing train ticket vouchers for those who do not have the funds to move on to the next step in their journey.
+ We are investigating other local agencies to see if we can support them as well as seeing if we can support agencies in Austria or Germany as people head in their direction.
+ We believe this is not a short term issue, so we will hold onto some funds to continue support as the weather gets colder and more people arrive.

Our goal is to be very transparent with your generous contributions. We are so very appreciative!!
Your donations = these hands serving!
Busy feet thanks to your generosity!
Happiness at moving on in the journey!

We cannot tell you how much your support and donations are appreciated. Today, we were able to buy more tents, shoes, socks, baby wipes, toothbrushes and toothpaste, toys...and much more. Supplies have already been handed out and we have lists for tomorrow.

Please know that this is a TEAM effort of amazing people coming together to do very simple things for people in need. We are being thoughtful with spending your donations wisely and are acting in the immediate, while also pondering the needs of the very unknown future.

We are all astounded, humbled, and grateful for your kindness and support. Keep it coming - there's more to be done!

I am so glad your group is getting help to the immigrants. Can you tell us when you are low on money? Maybe some of us can contribute again if needed.
