The Story of José
I never asked him about his life despite working for many years in my house maintaining my beloved garden.
Time has passed and his health has being deteriorating, so his illness forced him to stop working. During all this time up until now, he was living amid construction materials and machines in an abandoned piece of land someone left him to watch and take care of. Eventually the owners of the machines came to pick them up. He was left there, waiting for someone to honor his work debts, which until today, hasn’t happened.
Just like me, nobody knew that this same man became motherless since the age of 4. His brothers are older, so it was less difficult for them to keep on going. He was raised on the streets, however this was no reason for self-pity. Despite being illiterate, this good man learned to sum, subtract, divide and multiply and so he started his journey from Los Andes (Andeans mountains) to Los Teques (metropolitan area). Since I met him, he has been nothing but a hard-worker, always taking care of all the gardens and small parklands around the suburbs where I live. In his free time, he used to walk around the zone with an ice cream push-cart to earn
some extra income. He never rested.
At his 50’s, José Arellano suffers from insulin-dependent diabetes. In addition to this, people from the neighborhood evicted him from this same land he lived in for more than 20 years. He has a family land in Los Andes, but he has no house built and with his health problems he has no other way to get an income, so basically, he depends on the kindness of few people to eat a daily meal and get insulin.

Durante muchos años tuve un jardinero que a pesar de trabajar durante muchos años en mi casa, nunca le pregunté sobre su vida.
El tiempo pasó y una enfermedad melló su salud, así que tuvo que dejar de trabajar. Aquel hombre vivía en un terreno baldío en medio de materiales y máquinas de construcción que dejaron a su cuidado. Eventualmente, los dueños vinieron a buscar las máquinas, y él permaneció ahí, esperando que alguien honrara sus deudas laborales, cosa que hasta el sol de hoy, nunca sucedió.
Así como yo, nadie sabía que este mismo hombre quedó huérfano de madre a los 4 años, y en la repartición de los niños él fue el único que quedó bajo su propio cargo. Sus hermanos son mayores, por lo que fue menos difícil para ellos salir adelante, pero para él su padre fue la calle, sin embargo esto no fue motivo para lamentarse y quedarse sin hacer nada. A pesar de ser analfabeta, el señor aprendió a sumar, restar, dividir y multiplicar y así emprendió su viaje desde Los Andes hasta Los Teques (Altos Mirandinos). Era muy trabajador, hacia jardines de urbanizaciones y casas, y en su tiempo libre, tiraba de un carrito de helados, o sea, nunca descansó.
Ahora con 50 años, José Arellano padece de diabetes insulinodependiente. Aunado a esto, lo desalojaron del terreno en el que durante más de 20 años vivió. El tiene un terreno familiar en Los Andes, pero no tiene casa y con su problema de salud no tiene cómo mantenerse, así que depende de la bondad de pocas personas para que le consiga. Su medicamento (insulina) y al menos un plato de comida diario seguro.
