Nate's leg surgery

Donation protected
Nate is a LuvFurMutts Rescue dog.  Nate had surgery to fix a birth defect that the vet (Dr. Meakin) thinks can reconnect his bones that are not connecting to make his knee cap stronger. The vet is 80% sure that the surgery will work, and Nate will get to be a normal dog. The estimated cost of the surgery is around $1,000. If the surgery works, he expects full ability restored to the leg, not just an improvement of what it is now.

Nate is a male terrier mix. He is between 2 & 3 and is 14 lbs. He was one of 11 dogs that LFM's took from a hoarding case March 23, 2015. The hoarder said all the dogs were 5 to 7, but the first time we took Nate to the vet he said he is no more than 2.5 years old. There were 22 dogs in the yard Nate lived in. Nate was skinny and had very little hair when we got him due to flea dermatitis.

Nate has a birth defect. He has a barrel chest and his back right leg sways as he walks. The vet says there is no reason why he cannot live a normal life. His adopter will not incur expenses due to this as there is no fix for his birth defect. It does not hurt him or his ability to get around at all.

We have learned a lot about Nate during the eight months we have had him. Due to his disability, Nate was at the bottom of his pack. It was easy for any of the 22 dogs he lived with to pick on him. Nate was very food aggressive at first, but once he learned that he would get food everyday without fighting for it, he started eating with other dogs and even trades bowls. Nate is very well pad trained. Which makes him a good companion for any older or disabled person with winter and ice in near future.

Nate has lived his entire life alone and afraid. Nate has never been loved, held, or played with by any human. He gets love in his foster home, but he is only one member of a pack and he has no chance to bond with her. He has no idea what a dogs life should be like or how it would feel to have an owner who loved him, cuddled with him and only saw what is in his heart. He goes to events and people are nice to him. They say he adorable, but of course they adopt the little, cute and fuzzy dogs and pass him over every time.

Nate spent his first two days in his foster home comatose. He was a statue. Literally scared stiff. Now he glues himself to his foster mom's feet when she sits and follows her every move. He sleeps with her and will stay still all night long. He would rather have you pet him than give him a treat. Nate has become used to being crated, but does not tear anything up if you leave him out. He get's so excited when you return that he nibbles you like he missed you so bad he just wants to eat you up. We have not seen any aggression out of Nate except for jealous growls.

Nate loves to go any place you want to go. We would not never take him out without a leash but a leash is not necessary to keep Nate by you. We have not had Nate around cats but he seems to show no preference between adults and children. If anyone wants to love on him, he just wants to love them back.
