Puppy Aladdin's Leg Amputation
On 1/5/16 while browsing a Facebook Yardsale page, I came across two puppies being sold. As a dog trainer with a passion for animal rescue, I touched bases with the owner to tell him that while I could not purchase his puppies, I would take them and pay for a spay surgery for the mother of the puppies. He agreed and I took the 20 minute drive to Espanola to pick them up.
On arrival, the owner of the puppies told me that the male had "hurt his leg somehow." I could immediately tell it didn't look right; he was placing no weight on the leg and the knee was swollen four times the size it should be. I loaded up the pups and was immediately on the phone with my vet on the way home.
The pups, christened Jasmine and Aladdin, were vaccinated, dewormed, and given a nutritious meal and lots of love. We discovered that Aladdin's leg was broken in two places, one of which was an old fracture that was calcified and necrotic. His growth plate was chipped, the ligaments on his knee were completely torn, and the best course of action for his comfort would be amputation.
He is comfortable with a pain patch and loving care right now, and is getting his amputation surgery and neuter on Wednesday the 13th of January.
Because I have worked extensively with the Animal Clinic of Los Alamos in the past, they have disounted his X-rays and are capping the surgery at 1500. Between the surgery and supportive care, his amputation will cost 1800... and that doesn't include spay/neuter, vaccinations, food, or training.
Aladdin and Jasmine are fosters #63 and #64 for me, and they'll be so grateful for your help. As soon as they are healthy they'll be off to new homes!
