<font color="#333333">Last month Be Nguyen was hospitalized for low functioning thyroid but more problematically  masses were discovered in his abdominal area and lungs. The prognosis is not great and during his week in the hospital he was advised to close his business and retire as a first step towards a very uncertain future.</font><br /><br /><font color="#333333">For over 40 years, Be, a Vietnamese immigrant and bespoke tailoring professional, has overcome innumerable obstacles and challenges to become a self-sustaining and supportive pillar of our community. His journey from a humble tailor to a master of his craft is one of resilience, determination, and love. Working seven days a week for decades, he not only perfected his craft but also built a better life for his family, helping to bring them from Vietnam and overcoming countless obstacles along the way.

Now, as Be faces retirement, we are coming together to give back to a man who has given so much. This fundraiser aims to provide him with a well-deserved cushion as he transitions into this new season of his life. </font><br /><br /><font color="#333333">Retirement savings was never an option in his line of work, and now Be is facing a future in which financial stability is no longer sustainable and. Illness Forced Him To Retire

<div>At just 2 years old, this black Labrador puppy had already been through five different owners. One of them used a shock collar on her. She lived in fear, struggled with PTSD, resource guarding, food aggression.

<div>Then two months ago, Justin, my partner, met her — and refused to let her story end there. Slowly, with patience, consistency, and love, Lady began to change. She stopped living in survival mode. She became less reactive and more trusting with Justin. For the first time in her life, Lady got to run off leash. She learned to run beside my mountain bike through the fields. She started relaxing around the other dogs — the pug and the German Shepherd -- and finally got a real bed.

<div>She was finally becoming what she had never been allowed to be before:

<div>Then last weekend, Lady was in a horrific accident.

<div>While Justin was mowing the field on the John Deere tractor, Lady didn’t understand the danger of the machine. In a heartbreaking accident, her front paw was pulled into the mower. She suffered severe lacerations down to the bone and multiple broken bones.

<div>The emergency veterinary costs were already over $3,000 just to save her leg and stabilize her injuries. Because of both the severity of her injuries and her history of past abuse, Lady must be fully sedated and monitored for every bandage change and treatment appointment. Over the next 8–12 weeks, she will require veterinary care twice a week. the projected follow-up costs of another $8,000-$10,000 -- and Justin needs help to help Lady.

From Shock Collar to Second Chance: Help Lady Heal

<div>We are friends of <strong>Leanne</strong> who want to help her with the enormous burden she faces as she undergoes additional treatment for chronic myelomonocytic leukemia. Leanne will receive a stem cell transplant in October at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. She faces <strong>staggering medical bills</strong> from the transplant, along with earlier cancer treatments. Leanne is required to stay in Rochester for three months. She has less expensive housing at the Hospitality House near Mayo, but it will still add up over the long stay.

Like any other community, abuse exists in the Muslim community. Close to 50% of American Muslims have reported facing some form of abuse in their lifetime.<br /><br /><br />Last summer our community got a glimpse of that, there had seen an enormous amount of women and young girls speaking about their experiences with sexual assault and harassment, sparking our own #Metoo movement. Many sisters came out with stories of abuse. These sisters all wished their community had resources for them. Muslimah against abuse centers aims to provide those resources for the community. <br /><br /><br />MAAC is a newly founded organization, building on years of volunteer-based community work that has and continues to plan on supporting women from marginalized communities that otherwise had no place to seek the resources and support they require. Ramadan is the month of giving and supporting individuals in need. This Ramadan our goal is to raise $50,000. The proceeds will go to our Teen Awareness Sessions, Sisters Support Groups, Muslimah’s Peace Circles, and Personal consultations services. <br /><br /><br />Our sisters deserve our attention and deserve a space where they feel love, safe, and heard. While commuting on a scooter, Jacob was hit by a car running a red light at the intersection of Highway 94 and Taylor Street. He was immediately transported to the trauma ICU at Cook County Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment for severe injuries, including multiple breaks and fractures in his arm, a shattered elbow, and a burst vertebrae which is causing compression of his spinal cord. He will require multiple surgeries on the arm, including plastic surgeries to reconstruct the elbow, and will also require a spinal fusion to secure his vertebrae.

<div>Clayton and Cheyenne are your all American couple. They met, fell in love, became the best of friends, got married, had their son Cillian and now have a baby girl due next month. Their life was everything they could’ve ever dreamt of until Thursday, July 25th 2024, when Clayton tragically fell from his commercial fishing boat in Egegik, AK. His crew heard the splash and immediately reported him overboard and requested help looking for him. Unfortunately, after about 36 hours of the Coast Guard, other fishermen (including his father), and local volunteers, searching by boat and foot, the search was suspended. The only sign of Clayton were his shoes that washed up to a mudbank. Their dream life turned into a family’s worst nightmare in the blink of an eye. Clayton, a WA state resident(Everson, WA), has been fishing in Alaska since he was a teenager, with his father. He continued down that path as an adult, buying his own boat and managing a crew of his own, still fishing alongside his father. This means Clayton is away working for months at a time and his wife is holding down the fort at home. They countdown the months, weeks, and days until they’re together again. He’s a true family man. When Clayton isn’t spending time with his wife and son, he’s fishing or hunting to make a living and provide food for them. He’s the provider for his family. His wife Cheyenne stays home with their almost 2-year-old son and will be welcoming their baby girl in a matter of weeks, now presumably on her own. She is trying to stay strong, but no wife or mother should feel a financial burden while grieving the loss of her husband, all while bringing a new baby into the world, who will never meet her daddy. Help support the Hoy family through their sudden crisis

<div>So, my dad lives up in the mountains in the Eastern Highlands in Zimbabwe, Africa. And he lives in a little house in the middle of nowhere with no internet and just enough solar electricity to power his lights and charge his phone. 
</div>

<div>Now you might be wondering why my dad lives like this. And there are a few reasons for that. Firstly, his mother (my grandmother) built that little house with her bare hands, and she and my grandad are both buried in the garden under an apple tree. And every morning my dad sits on the bench beside that tree and drinks his coffee with them. Another reason is that it might just be the most beautiful place in the entire world. 
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>You’re also probably wondering how my dad makes money. And the truth is he doesn’t make much money but the reason for that is because he’s too good a person.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>You see what my dad does is he builds beehives. Then he takes those beehives to all the communities in the surrounding areas and he gives them to whoever wants them, no strings attached. And he says to those people, "If you let me teach you how to keep bees ethically and sustainably, and you don’t spray pesticides on the plants that they pollinate, then you can bring the honey that your bees produce to me and I'll buy it from you." And so that’s what they do. 
</div>

</div>
<div>Some months my dad gets two tonnes of honey delivered to him from the local communities by whatever mode of transport they can manage. By foot, ox and cart, bicycle whatever they have. My dad then processes the honey naturally, packages it and sells it in the city. 
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>And you might think this seems like a pretty good way to make money. 
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>But you see, my dad believes in paying people fairly... more than fairly. In fact I’m almost certain that he pays more for his honey than anyone else in the country. He also believes in making his honey affordable because he knows that a lot of people can't afford luxuries like honey. So, after everything, my dad barely makes a dollar for each jar of honey he sells. 
</div>

</div>
<div>Now, my dad has been offered several opportunities to sell or scale his business for a lot of money. But he has always refused to sign the contracts because no one could commit to his ethical and sustainable terms. 
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Needless to say, my dad isn’t doing this for money. He’s doing it because he believes in helping people. He believes in protecting nature. He believes that communities should look after each other. He believes in the goodness of human beings. Because that is the kind of person his parents raised him to be. And I’m privileged to say that it’s the kind of person my dad raised me to be. 
</div>

<div>That being said, unfortunately money is a necessity in this life. And in order for my dad to keep helping people and support communities, to keep protecting bees and the ecosystems, he does need money.
</div>

<div>So, that's why I'm here. And if you believe in what he’s doing as much as I do, even the smallest donation would mean the world to him.

She has undergone surgery to repair her broken femur and four teeth that had to be pulled from her gums due to the impact from her chin hitting the pavement.

<div>Our dear friend, Veronica Hernandez, and her family, have experienced the most unexpected and shocking loss.  Their beloved son, Diego Fountain, earned his angel wings on September 12. As they process this terrible loss, there will be unplanned expenses and hardships. It will be difficult for Veronica to work, care for her family, and pay funeral expenses. This family has already been through so much these last few years with health and medical challenges and the loss of other close family members. <div>For the past two years my son Josh has been fighting for his life. He developed a rare blood disease called auto immune hemolytic anemia. What this means is that his red blood cells are being destroyed faster than they can be made. There is no cure and since it's so rare we have been dealing with blood transfusions and a lot of trial and error regarding how to treat it. As a last resort, because blood transfusions are an emergency measure and not sustainable as treatment, he was placed on high doses of prednisone which is a steroid and is not good for his liver and kidneys long term. The result is that his treatment is causing more harm to his body with the possibility of liver or kidney failure. He’s been told that the only intervention measure remaining is to remove his spleen and hope for the best.  That procedure is his last resort because it has only a 50-50 chance of success. But we have to take that chance if it will help Josh’s body fight. It is so difficult to face the uncertainty but the situation is made even harder because of the economic distress we are facing.

<div>It feels shameful to share this publicly but on the urging of friends I am finding courage: I recently had to leave a domestic abuse situation in which the assault I suffered left me debilitated and trying to recover from hand and back injuries. I worked part time while trying to recover but was laid off from my job just last week. Meanwhile, Josh is desperately trying to keep working because that’s how he maintains his health insurance. Unfortunately, his insurance doesn’t cover much. I truly appreciate the friends who strongly encouraged me to start this GoFundMe. I would never have imagined doing such a thing because I come from a proud family. But maybe you will understand when I say I am a mom and the love of my son makes me do the impossible.

<div> I have always prided myself in helping others, whether friends or strangers, and I know everyone is going through hard times right now, and I feel deeply the struggle that we are all facing. But we are desperate because things are so dire. So I need to ask for help to take care of my son as he faces life-changing surgery, and medical and other expenses to sustain his post-op recovery. John has been in the Philippines for about 2 months now. He's been over there previously and met a family who he befriended and wanted to find work in this new environment. Unfortunately, work has been hard to come by and John has struggled to the point where he needs to come back to Canada. His financial resources are tapped, so we're hoping to raise enough money for John to buy a flight home.

My name is Ethan Kim-Shinn; I am a student but, most importantly, a friend of friends of Lach. I heard Lach's situation from a close friend of mine. When Lach made the news public, I heard more and more students trying to find out ways to help him stay. I looked into grants and scholarships for an Australian student studying in Canada. Unfortunately, due to the timing and Quest universities policies, we needed to find another way to raise money.<br /><br /><strong>What is Quest University?</strong><br /><br />Quest University is a non-secular private Canadian University, located in Squamish, BC. Quest University is also on a block program, where courses are 1 month long and 3 hours a day. Where people focus on one subject in depth in a small classroom setting. At the end of your time at Quest you create a question, it is quintessentially a thesis that you have been constructing over the course of your career. <br /><br />Quest is also located in one of the most beautiful places I have ever experienced. I think a part of it is that it’s my home. This place is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced, any house I’ve experienced. Before coming to Quest, I feel like I lived a plethora of different lives – bouncing around from place to place, never finding where I was going to fit. But then I got here, and it changed in a way I didn’t expect. It forces you to question everything in a way you never have before, pushing me to limits I didn’t even know I had.<br />But it’s much more than me. It’s those around the community, and I am so lucky to be a part of it. In this place, I’ve met people that are just beyond words. My best attempt is they are people that will capture you and bring fulfillment to your life without a blink of an eye when they don’t even mean to — resulting in a community where things are achieved every day that can’t be fabricated in the outside world across years. <br /><strong><br /></strong><strong>What makes Quest worth it?<br /></strong><br />From: Lach,<br /><br />Every day I get to witness an act of kindness, courage, compassion, and love that are not expressed to gain something, but for the simple reason that they can. Never have I seen a group of people so willing to overcome challenges and fight for fairness and equality and the most harmonious coexistence achievable. And this does not mean it is perfect – by all means, there are problems everywhere, and Quest shares this too. But the difference is that almost everyone I know here refuses to stop trying, and that is one of the most beautiful things I’ve had the pleasure to witness. It’s for that same reason that I became an RA and a coordinator for our annual drag show. I wanted to give back what I receive daily. I wanted to give those around me their best chance – to allow the extraordinary people of this community to live their truth, find their path, and experience valuable growth for their future while I do the same. And although my reality for continuing this journey grows smaller by the day, I don’t intend to stop looking for more solutions. <br />Because what kind of a Quest member would I be if I didn’t even try?

Long before downtown regained its energy, Tom believed in the neighborhood and created a welcoming place where people could gather, celebrate, and connect over good food and drinks. Tom persevered through economic downturns, changing downtown conditions, and the enormous challenges brought by the COVID pandemic. Through these tumultuous seasons, Tom has become universally respected for his quiet determination, deep generosity, and a habit of helping others without drawing attention to himself.

<div>Heather Edwards (of Metro Eugene Rotary Club) recently shared the following<span>: "</span><span>When fires ravaged the West Coast in 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, local restaurant owner Tom Kamis and his dedicated staff prepared hundreds of meals a day for displaced families. What started as Thanksgiving boxes turned into weeks of meeting the most immediate need of so many families: food.

The Mission and Food for Lane County donated food to local restaurants to prepare and cook. During that terrifying time, they all wanted to help our most devastated neighbors, those who’d lost everything...On one of their busiest days, they made and boxed about 300 meals. 'It was one of my best experiences in the restaurant industry,' Tom recalled recently. And he was quick to point out that Soriah’s Ib Hamide and Ambrosia’s Armen Kevrekian also committed their restaurants to the substantial effort. </span>

<div><span>For 16 years, The Davis offered a weekly home to the Eugene Metropolitan Rotary Club. Unlike most meeting spaces ideal for Rotary clubs, Tom never charged a rental fee, never made us pay a flat fee for food, never restricted us to a heat-lamp buffet, or required RSVPs for a weekly headcount. He always consulted us on what configuration worked best for our meetings. He provided the A/V equipment we needed to host guest speakers, to share presentations, and to hear one another. That kind of extraordinary flexibility and accommodation is unheard of. And, of course, like any gifted restaurateur, his menus always offered excellent food, classic favorites, and custom drinks. </span><span>For all the jokes Rotarians have to make about 'rubber chicken lunches', Metrotarians could always tell guests and prospective members to join us downtown for some of the best food and wine in Eugene, and mean it. </span>

<div><span>As a pillar of the community, he is exactly the kind of small business owner everyone loves to support. </span><span>When we found out Tom was fighting a compounding series of medical crises, we were devastated to learn that one insurance company after another was denying him the treatment he needed in order to recover and the care he needed to stay healthy. </span>
</div>

<div><span>Running any business in downtown Eugene is challenging enough, between the difficult real estate market, increased crime, and folks suffering from untreated mental health issues. So when Tom could not access the significant medical care he needed, his well-run and long-successful business began to suffer. He fought hard for years, but the collision of these factors proved insurmountable, even for someone as talented, business-savvy, and industrious as Tom. </span>

<div><span>Now it’s our turn. We have the opportunity to help our friend, if even just a fraction of how much he has helped us as a Rotary club, everything he’s enabled us to focus on by providing a meeting space that wasn’t just stable, it was an exceptional place to call Metro’s home since 2010.
