He was an old soul and his love, warmth, humor, and zest for life were infectious and inspiring. Nick lived every day with gratitude, and humility, and made everyone around him feel welcome and loved.

Coming Together for the Johnson Family

<div>The Adams family have touched the lives of so many youth in our small town of Steamboat Springs. From teaching to coaching to writing grants for innovative educational projects and supporting youth sports programs, Chris and Lisa and their two incredible sons are all in. Their oldest son Kellen is a sophomore at CU and Brady is a college bound senior. Chris has recently been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and anyone who knows Chris knows his thoughtfulness and kindness instantly. <div>We have all faced challenges in life - some greater than others. We thought we understood the meaning of courage until our miracle and greatest gift in life, Oliver Thomas, was born in 2009. He is our nephew and our hero.

<div>Ollie came into our world with multiple, immediately life threatening, congenital heart defects which were not detected prior to his birth. In addition, our sister Jen experienced severe complications promptly after giving birth which resulted in emergency surgery. Our brother-in-law, Geoff, was a pillar of love and fortitude during this harrowing time. Their collective strength was unparalleled, to say the least.

<div>The first seven years of Oliver’s life consisted of 7 open heart surgeries, a cardiac arrest, 2 strokes, and countless invasive procedures. He and his parents lived in hospitals in Los Angeles and Boston until Ollie was four. After that, they were able to move back home, in LA, receiving nursing at home and shorter local hospital stays.

<div>Ollie has been able to go to school, but with many limitations due to his heart and the permanent effects of the strokes. He cannot play sports, is particularly susceptible to virus and infection, and has never been able to eat solid food. Despite these obstacles, Oliver is one of the funniest and most loving people we know. He has a passion for Funko Pops, vintage Pez dispensers, books, music, and other collectibles. He has memorized the name of every US President including the dates they served, and personal facts about them (like the names of their wives and children!). He loves to read, play loud music, and listen to stories about just about anything - the funnier the better!

<div>Oliver is now 14 years old. Over the past year his heart function started to deteriorate.
</div>

</div>
<div>On October 16th of this year, doctors at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) did an exploratory catheterization procedure, which revealed Oliver’s heart was very sick. Three days later, it was determined that the only course of treatment would be a heart transplant. On October 31st, he was listed in the National Heart Transplant database. The anticipated wait time was 6-8 weeks, but by the grace of God, Oliver received a new heart only one week later on November 7th.
</div>

</div>
<div>The surgery went incredibly well, and Oliver is recovering in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at CHLA, where he will remain for the next several weeks. The speed with which he received a new heart is nothing short of a miracle and our family is eternally grateful.
</div>

</div>
<div>The road to recovery is a long one and there are significant out of pocket costs for the family, notwithstanding the significant expense of Oliver’s care to date. The family has spared no expense in order to provide Ollie with every therapy and necessary form of care to assure his well being.
</div>

<div>Going forward, the family will incur material expenses. For example:

<div>Hi, I am Lindsay Holcroft. This account has been created in hopes to assist my beloved older brother, Jason Hurst, with immediate medical needs, while simultaneously alleviating financial stress from missed work and relieving the burden that illness brings. Let me tell you a little bit about Jason and what it’s like to be his little sister. There has never been a moment that I questioned my brother’s love for me and our family. He is the type of man that does not shy away from affection, up for embracing a loved one anywhere, shouting “I love you more,” several times as you part ways. He is loyal, protective, warm, optimistic, energetic, kind, loving and friendly. Jason has a smile that he wears from ear to ear, doesn’t pass by a stranger without greeting them and radiates positive energy. He is full of passion and fire. Jason is a master story teller and can entertain anybody with his humorous memories of growing up. He is a beloved son, brother, husband, father, cousin, uncle and friend. He lives for his family… and fishing. Jason is passionate about the ocean, living on the big island of Hawaii and truly embracing and enjoying every moment life gives him.

<div>Jason and his lovely wife Lauren have created a beautiful life together, after falling in love right out of high school. They have three children aged 17, 15 and 11. Jason and Lauren both work and parent full time. They are proud and supportive parents, chauffeuring their children to and from every activity known to man: rowing, robotics, softball, soccer, stem club, nannying, etc. Their family means everything to them. They are loved in their community and grateful for the people that have been a part of their journey.

<div>The first week of April, 2023, our family got news that rocked our world— Jason was diagnosed with cancer. While we were all aware that Jason had been seeing doctors about a growth on his lip, we never imagined the diagnosis would be   Lymphoepithelial Carcinoma. The first week of waiting for pet scan results was truly overwhelming. Our family is no stranger to loss, as the eldest of Jason’s three sisters is a young widow. The thought of cancer and the unknown was all too much for us to digest and process, but it reminded us how tight our family is and that we can always count on each other for support. 
</div>
<div>After the longest seven days of our lives, Jason’s pet scan results came back clear of metastasis. We’re grateful to God that it hasn’t spread throughout his body, but we still need more tests before it is determined whether or not it’s completely isolated to the tumor in his lip. 
</div>
<div>As of now, the immediate medical plan is for Jason to be operated on May 11, 2023. He will have the tumor and several lymph nodes removed. His team of doctors will formulate a plan once the pathology of his specific case is better known which will be within weeks of his first surgery. The doctors have mentioned multiple surgeries in order to rebuild his lip and radiation to assure all cancer cells are removed, but again, we will not know the exact plan until after the first operation. 
</div>
<div>Jason and his wife will be commuting by flight to Oahu for each of his procedures. Unfortunately, they don’t provide the testing and surgeries on the big island. This cost will become a financial burden rapidly. At this point, it is unknown what the insurance will cover, but it is likely their out of pocket premium will be upward of $40,000. On top of the medical bills and travel expenses, Jason will need to take several months off of work in order to allow his body to heal. 
</div>

Help Jason Hurst Fight Cancer

<div>Friends.....My Lifelong Friend and Legend JP Marengo recently had a potentially life-altering surfing accident. JP was doing the thing he loves the most and doing it better than most when he struck his head on the reef.

<div>JP was knocked unconscious while under the water and temporarily paralyzed. If not for the quick actions of close friends, Lifeguards and EMTs, JP could potentially no longer be with us. They responded incredibly fast, and JP was whisked off to the hospital to be treated.
</div>
<div>Upon arrival, JP had little to no use of his limbs. Over the last three weeks, JP has made tremendous progress. He still has immobility in his left arm but is getting better daily. He still faces a reasonably long recovery and physical therapy, but the long-term prognosis is optimistic.
</div>

<div>As a result of his injuries, JP has been unable to work and, as you can imagine, is incurring some significant medical bills. Any help is greatly appreciated and would go a long way to getting JP back to work and back in the water.

<div>His adventurous spirit led him west to Colorado Mountain College in Steamboat Springs, Class of 2002. In Steamboat, he found his passion for the mountains and met his best friend and the love of his life, Mara. Anna, Bode, and Carey are the very best parts of Chris and through them his bright light will shine on. Over the years, Chris and Mara have built a successful business, Soda Mountain Construction and Design. Chris’ entrepreneurship, creativity, attention to detail, trustworthiness, and good humor have touched the lives of so many. Chris and his family are cherished members of their Steamboat community.

Holiday Support for our Merritt ESOL Students

On November 17th, in Steamboat Springs Colorado, a devastating fire took place on David Stone's ranch. The fire destroyed David's Mechanic shop, where he worked for the past 40 years. David Stone is a mechanic and incredible father to Katelyn Stone. All of Davids tools, equipment, and belongings from the last 40 years were destroyed. David Stone unfortunately didn't have any insurance to cover what was lost in the fire. We hope to raise money to build a new shop and help replace the equipment David Stones company had. <strong>ITP Students Raising Money for Capstone Project</strong><br /><br />We are a group of 12 driven individuals studying Industrial Technology and Packaging at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. This quarter we are taking ITP 467, Applied Business and Production Management, a course that is designed to challenge students to apply all of the knowledge and technical skills they have learned by creating 100+ products in just 10 short weeks. This includes the design, prototyping, processing, quality control, resource management, cost control, marketing, and sales of a student built, one of a kind product.  Our group is looking to raise money to help fund this project during our fall quarter. Industrial Technology Capstone Project

Hi Family and Friends of the Nunez's, <br /><br />Anthony is the bravest person I know.  On May 31st, he underwent surgery at Rady's in order to try and live his "best life".  There have been many complications of which the source is still unknown.  He is in a tremendous amount of pain.  Since his surgery, he has been in the hospital for more than 28 days.  Not only is this challenging for Ant Man but it is challenging for Jess, SoSo, and JoJo.  While Jess has amazing coworkers who have been extremely supportive, she hasn't been able to work steadily for a month now and the bills are really starting to pile in.  If you are able to help in any way, the Nuni's would greatly appreciate it.  The family would love food delivered or any donation amount that you can spare.  Your generosity means the world to Jess and the kids.<br /><br />We will post regular updates here so that you can track Anthony's progress.  Prayers high for the family, please.  <br /><br />With love,<br />Jen

Anthony Nunez Medical Fundraiser

Life long surfer and Windansea icon, Scot Cherry, needs our help.<br /><br />Scot will be undergoing a major back surgery later this week. This will be a TWO DAY operation. He will be put in a medically induced coma for the full 2 days needed to fix the multiple issues with his spine. After a successful surgery and many months of rehabilitation, he should have some quality of life restored as well as a reduction in the excruciating pain he has endured for the last year and a half. <br /><br />What happened: Previous spinal surgery required fusions and stabilization with titanium screws. One of these screws snapped in half, causing the prior fusions to break apart and another disc in his lumbar to go out, pressing against his spinal cord. This is the type of pain to bring the strongest to their knees. <br /><br />Scot, as you may or may not know, is a pretty tough guy (who else can catch an 11’ thresher shark from a 13’ surfboard) and extremely self-sufficient. Unfortunately, he had to stop working over a year ago. He has spent the past year fighting with Blue Shield for a much needed CT scan that would have identified this problem much sooner. Blue Shield repeatedly denied his claim as “not medically necessary”. Scot also filed for disability, as this situation warranted, and was denied the benefits he is entitled to, possibly for a couple of years. <br /><br />Through all of this, Scot still tried to work some, was still present at Windansea, attempting to surf, assisting with Windansea Surf Club events, organizing paddle outs for our lost family and friends and even coordinating (for decades) the 33rd Annual Day at the Beach to benefit the children residing at the St. Vincent De Paul homeless shelter. Scot has been a fierce protector of Windansea Beach and its surfers. He operates much in the background, though you can hear his authoritative voice booming with instructions while he strives for perfection for all. <br /><br />We are hoping you will be able to contribute something to this fund for Scot. Scot Cherry Surgery

Have you been an NFL fan your whole life only to have your team suddenly taken away from your city? You may have been the most loyal and dedicated supporter but it didn't matter in the end. Have you ever wanted to tell the NFL how you actually feel? This is your chance.<br /><br />I'm born and raised here in San Diego. I've been a die hard San Diego Charger fan my whole life. I haven't missed a game in 25 years. The fact that Dean Spanos knew he was moving the Chargers years ago and tried to blame the people of San Diego for only getting 43% on Prop C is a disgrace. In 2013, The Chargers and San Diego State met to discuss the outdated jumbotron at Qualcomm Stadium. San Diego State offered to pay for HALF of a jumbotron that would be one of the biggest in the NFL and college football. And the Chargers? They declined. Why would the Chargers decline to make their fan experience better? Because they knew they were going to LA years ago. Prop C was the definition of a hoax.<br /><br />I'm here today to bring us together and help San Diego, St. Louis and Oakland cope with the loss of their respective teams. My plan is to rent a few billboards in LA that will be anti-NFL and anti-Dean Spanos. All of this just in time for the first ever "LA Chargers" home opener vs the Miami Dolphins on September 17th, 2017. The Chargers have three home games in a row and the billboards will be up not just for the first game but all three.<br /><br />This isn't just for San Diego fans. This is for Oakland fans and St. Louis fans as well. Your cities didn't deserve this and most importantly, you didn't deserve this. I can't get into too much detail about where and what the billboards will say, but I definitely plan on putting "#Oakland and #STL" on the anti-NFL billboard for the fans in Oakland and St. Louis. Roger Goodell keeps talking about how "painful" relocation is for the NFL. The NFL doesn't care about us at all. Roger Goodell makes 34 million dollars a year and could care less about the people in San Diego, Oakland or St. Louis. It's time for us to stick it to the NFL by having these billboards in LA call them out on their bullshit.<br /><br />To all of the LA Charger fans out there, I have no beef with you - seriously. From the 2006 team to the 2000 team, we've been Charger fans forever - through the good and the bad times. There is no reason for there to be any animosity between us. I was at the LA Rally when the Chargers were introduced. When I was there I met some really knowledgeable Charger fans and they understood my frustration. In fact this could bring us together. Let's be real - as long as the Chargers have a Spanos as an owner, they'll never win a championship. How did The Chargers handle LT? Seau? Weddle? They released Rodneny Harrsion. How did they end 56 years with city? A letter. Even if they were still here, it's a poorly run organization. If anything we should be uniting so that Dean sells the team and the Chargers have a real chance at success!<br /><br />I promise you a great billboard with a powerful message to the NFL and Dean Spanos. <br /><br />- SD Sign guy
