When Jennifer, a Nurse, discovered her 19-month old daughter, Amelia, had developed type-1 diabetes, she found out immediately that parents without her training would struggle to find resources and child care for their children.
In greater Detroit, where Jennifer and Amelia live, she was shocked when she discovered that there were no local daycares with a qualified staff to administer insulin to children, and not even one of them had a diabetic child in their care. Sending Amelia to one of these daycares would also require hiring someone to go to the daycare to test her blood sugar and give her the necessary shots; something wildly outside the financial realities of many families of the 4,000-plus children in Michigan who were diagnosed with diabetes in 2018 alone.
Jennifer decided to start Amelia &
Friends, an affordable in-home daycare dedicated to supporting families with type-1 diabetic children. Her dream is to create an environment where children and families can have the same opportunity for wonderful childcare, all while feeling safe knowing that the staff on hand are also professionally trained to provide the medical care needed as well.
To do so, Jennifer is going to need our help! In addition to the licensing, inspections and the curriculum, she is also going to equip the space with nap time items, educational supplies, and play structures. She's also going through the process of establishing her business, eventually hiring staff, and conducting community outreach.
