TWO INNOCENT IN ICE CUSTODY: RAISING $ FOR RELEASE

During the first week of August, two of my cousins, Juan Manuel Perez and Jorge Perez, were detained by ICE. They were on their way to work in Florida, where a presumed ICE raid occurred. Their VISAS had expired, so they were taken in.

My mother got a phone call later that day from Florida. A woman, with my cousins, was telling her she needed to pay the full amount in order for them to be released. Knowing very little English, the women passed the phone to my cousins who pleaded to my mom to help them. The sounds of crying kids in the back irked us.

I looked both of my cousins up on the public booking log, and they were no where to be found with committed crime. Nevertheless my curiosity got the best of me and I phoned the immigration facility in Jacksonville, Florida. 
 
After being put on hold for 20 minutes, I asked Jeff if paying the bond was the ONLY way they'd be released.

He replied," Yes. It is the only way and you can find an immigration center near you to pay in 5 full payments.."

We cannot phone or communicate with them like a regular jail allows. We are given one option, according to Jeff whom I spoke with, and it is to pay in full amount 7000 USD each or leave them there. 

Still curious, I asked," So how were they targeted? Did an ICE raid happen or did something lead up to their arrest?"

This rubbed off on Jeff in the worst possible way, and maybe I should have worded it better. 

"Oh, so you're going to complain about ICE raids now ma'am?!" I tried apologizing, denying that I wasnt calling about that.

"No no, LET me speak. They're illegal. That is why they're here. I cant tell you why they're here. Everyone in this facility is here for a reason and its because of their unlawful presence in this country."

I felt defeated after that phone call. I was wishing to get some closure on what was going on, but inevitably not even not immigration facility can help with that. I do understand there is sensitive information, and I cannot argue with that. But after Jeff blew up like that, I felt disrespected and didn't want to talk about financial issues.

My family just wants them back, but we can't afford to pay 14,000. We're really trying to get in contact with a lawyer to try lowering the cost..but it's a waiting game.

I know my aunt in Mexico is waiting for her kids to come back, and the only way we can expedite that is by fundraising for their release.

Durante la primera semana de agosto, dos de mis primos, Juan Manuel Pérez y Jorge Pérez, fueron detenidos por ICE. Iban a trabajar a Florida, donde una presunta incursión de ICE pasó. Sus VISAS de trabajo habían expirado, y los llevaron.

Mi madre recibió una llamada más tarde ese día desde Florida. Una mujer, con mis primos, le decía que tenía que pagar la cantidad completa para que fueran liberados. Mi madre sabe muy poco el Inglés, así que la muje le paso la llamada a mis primos. Durante la llamada, los sonidos de niños llorando en la facilidad nos enchino la piel.

Busqué a mis dos primos en la pagina de registro público, y no estaban en ningún lugar registrados con ningún crimen mas que el ser inmigrantes. Sin embargo, mi curiosidad se apoderó de mí y llamé a las instalaciones de inmigración en Jacksonville, Florida.    Después de estar en espera por 20 minutos, le pregunte a Jeff si el pago de la fianza era la ÚNICA manera de que fueran liberados.

Él respondió: "sí. Es la única manera y usted puede encontrar un centro de inmigración cerca de usted para pagar en 5 pagos completos.."

No podemos llamar por teléfono o comunicarnos con ellos como lo permite una cárcel normal. Y según Jeff la única manera para dejarlos salir es pagando  en total la cantidad de $ 7,000 USD por cada uno. 

Aún con curiosidad, le pregunté, " ¿Cómo fueron arestados? ¿Ocurrió una redada de ICE o algo llevó a su arresto?"

Esto molesto a Jeff de la peor manera posible, y tal vez debería de haberle hablado  mejor.  "Oh, ¿así que ahora va a quejarse de las redadas, señora?!"

Traté de disculparme, negando que no llamaba por eso.

El luego dijo, "No, no, déjame hablar. Son ilegales. Por eso están aquí. No puedo decirte por qué están aquí. Todos en esta instalación están aquí por una razón y es debido a su presencia ilegal en este país"

Me sentí destrozada después de esa llamada. Yo estaba deseando conseguir algúna conclusión sobre lo que estaba pasando, pero, inevitablemente, ni siquiera el Servicio de inmigración pudo ayudarnos con eso. Entiendo que hay información sensible, y no puedo discutir eso. Pero después de la manera que Jeff explotó así, me sentí irrespetada y no quería hablar de asuntos financieros.

Mi familia sólo quiere que se regresen, pero no podemos pagar la cantidad de $ 14,000. Estamos tratando de ponernos en contacto con un abogado para tratar de bajar el costo..pero es un juego de espera.

Sé que mi tía en México está esperando que sus hijos vuelvan, y la única manera de que podamos acelerarlo es recaudando fondos para su liberación.
