Alex Morrell, 31 years old, died July 2, 2017 from a heroin overdose. He was released from prison just ten days earlier and was on the path to success when his demons overcame him.
Alex left behind his gorgeous, 11 year old daughter who was looking forward to spending the rest of her life with her daddy. They had ten glorious days together playing the guitar, swimming, taking the dogs for a walk, cooking his favorite meals together and now she's heartbroken, as am I, his mother. His only child, Atyana was born substance exposed to a variety of drugs and we haven't heard from her birth mother in nine years. As paternal grandmother, I am raising her as my own as I have been for several years.
Alex's daughter just started middle school and is struggling with not only a new environment, but a new "normal" without her dad.
During this critical period, I was lucky to have my eldest daughter Hannah back in Arizona for a few weeks but now that she is returning to San Diego, I have had to take a leave of absence from work to help his daughter heal, attend counseling and group therapy and just being here when she gets home from school and making sure she feels safe and loved. Atyana has already exhibited emotional and behavioral challenges so it's critical that I am here for her.
