NY Marathon Run : Abrigo Evangelico
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Trish Ramler and I will be fulfilling a long held dream of mine to run the New York Marathon on November1st, 2015. It is my strong belief that in order to make it meaningful I should help raise money for a worthy cause.
One of the Nurseries at the Abrigo
Since coming to Rio de Janeiro in January as an Expat, I have seen first hand the plight of the poor here.
In particular I have become involved through volunteering with a shelter/orphanage called Abrigo Evangelica da Pedra de Guaratiba.
The Abrigo has been operational for 60 years and is a registered NGO with the City of Rio De Janeiro.
Since 2009, it has expanded it's services to an establishment which serves as a shelter for very young children ages 0 - 4, who have been neglected or abandoned by their families, or are living in intolerable situations.
Despite the fact that the centre receives no public funding, the Director is legally obliged to accept any children placed there by the judicial system and can be deemed to be in contempt of court if the placement of a child is refused. At times, this can place an enormous burden on both financial and human resources.'
The centres primary objective is to care and look after the children placed there regardless of their sex, religion or race. Children who have been exposed to personal and domestic violence, children whose parents are dependant on drugs or have been exposed to the HIV virus, children on the street or children who have been abandoned by their families. The centre may have up to 40 children at any one time.
The funds raised through sponsorship of my NY Marathon run will go to a special project of fitting out a new kitchen at the Abrigo. The existing kitchen is not only a small, cramped space, but has the gas cylinder for the oven sitting on the floor, next to where the babies sleep!
The existing kitchen
A new kitchen would provide both more space and safety for the babies.
I will personally be able to oversee the works being done and will follow up with photos of the new kitchen, once the works are complete.
The area for the new kitchen
I look forward to your support and together we can make a difference!
