I am Tony Varela, husband of Naty and father of Simone and Samay. I am 34 years old, I live in Barranquilla, Colombia and I practice triathlon. I dedicate my kilometers of training and competition to children who fight against cancer - to true #superheroes.
What do I do?
I raise funds so that children who fight cancer and their families don´t have to leave their medical treatment because of lack of money. Last year, for the IRONMAN FRANKFURT, we raised 26 million pesos (COP), 7.852 EUR. This year, on September 24, 2017, I will compete at the IRONMAN CHATTANOOGA and by then we hope to raise 16.000 EUR.
How do I do it?
Through the campaign #TriathlonAgainst Cancer in social networks and GoFundMe, we motivate people and companies, teams, friends and athletes from around the world to make donations. These donations go to the Andrea and Vanessa Foundation , located in Barranquila, Colombia. This Home for children with Cancer provides psychological support, lodging, food and transportation for free to children who fight cancer and a member of their family. These families have few economic resources and come from small towns of the Colombian Caribbean coast. Without the support of the foundation, many would end up leaving the cancer treatment because of lack of resources.
Why do I do it?
In honor of the life and battle of my younger brother, Alex, who died of cancer in September 2015 at age 27. I honor children who fight cancer and their families, my #superheroes. The physical and mental effort involved in my preparation and competition is nothing compared to their fight for life.
