Tom & Katrin's visa and moving

Hi, we’re Tom and Katrin. If you don’t know us well, we’re Americans who have spent the last several years in the UK, where Tom’s been going to graduate school. He finished his postgraduate studies last year and his student visa’s expired, so he needs a job with a work visa. (Katrin has a job, but she’s a dependent on Tom’s visa.)
Tom has been offered a job in Sheffield (about 170 miles north of London, where we live now) that will sponsor a work visa, so we and our 3 cats can continue to stay in this country that we’ve come to love.
We’ve got the lawyer fees (ours is a weirdly complex case, and he’s been essential), visa application expenses, and NHS surcharge covered - just barely. Unfortunately, that eats up basically everything we have immediately available.
That's where you come in.
We need a hand with the expenses related to the move - the costs of arranging and traveling to viewings, deposit + first month's rent, moving all of our stuff, cleaning the old flat, and so on.
What we're asking for help with is the cost of helping us get settled:
- Incidental expenses like groceries and transit fares to tide us over before the move.
- A scouting trip to Sheffield to find a new place to live (roughly £90-£100 round-trip train fare, plus accommodation if we stay overnight).
- Deposit plus first month's rent on the new place. A ballpark figure for a decent one-bedroom place in Sheffield is around £1,400 total, not counting a pet deposit for the cats.
- Moving expenses (van + movers + mileage; around £500).
- A good-but- cheap cleaner to come in and make our old place presentable; we've been here over seven years, and want to do right by it.
- Miscellaneous incidentals once we get moved in, like groceries and household items.
Any amount you can give is greatly appreciated, and you’ll have our undying gratitude. As an added token of thanks, anyone who contributes over £40 (UK) or $50 (US) before August 15 will get a pair of socks hand-knit by Katrin (limit one pair per person).
