Tired Mums' Cake Club

Being mum (or dad!) to a baby can be an exhausting and isolating time. I've lost count of the number of times that I've sat in a coffee shop, rocking a pram, hoping my baby stays asleep so that I can have just ten precious minutes to drink a hot cup of coffee.

When I'm in a cafe, I often look around and see a mum, sitting on her own, with a pram or buggy, sometimes with a toddler in tow too. She has tired eyes and a slightly frazzled demeanour. You never know what kind of day that mum has had - has she been awake since 5am, struggled to find time to shower, battled to breastfeed her baby, dealt with multiple explosive nappies, had three cups of tea go cold, managed to wolf down one slice of toast when actually she could have done with more, raced to a baby class, arrived late feeling flustered and sweaty, dealt with a crying baby throughout the class, and finally - finally - managed to get her baby off to sleep, so she has come for a sit down and a coffee.

She deserves a well done, doesn't she? Just for getting to this point in the day without losing it. (Maybe she did lose it, that's OK too!)

So let's buy her a slice of cake. Or another coffee. And say to her: you're not alone. We get it. We've been there. You're doing brilliantly.

Sometimes, small random acts of kindness can lift a person and make their day or week. If you donate to Tired Mums' Cake Club, you'll be contributing towards mums (or dads!) in coffee shops up and down the UK being bought a cake or coffee.

Tired Mums' Cake Club has a small selection of trusted mums dotted around the UK, who will look for exhausted parents of small children and buy them a treat to lift their day.

So even a small donation will make a difference to a tired mum (or dad!)'s day.

FAQs

Who are you and how do we know the money raised will go to tired mums?
I'm Alison Perry - a journalist and blogger. You can read my blog - which I started in 2011 while on maternity leave with my eldest daughter  - here  and see my social media profiles over on Twitter , Facebook  and Instagram . I've written articles for parenting magazines like Gurgle and Mother & Baby along with articles for Grazia and Red. Of course, if you don't know me from Adam, you might not trust that this money will be spent in the way I'm describing but I can assure you that it will be. I'm totally trustworthy.

I'm still not sure I trust you....
No problem - if you're not happy about donating, then why not just buy cake or a cuppa for the next tired looking mum or dad that you spot in your local cafe or sitting on a bench? Or just give them a reassuring smile and tell them they're doing a great job. That way, you know 100% that your random act of kindness is happening as you'd like it to.

OK, I trust you and I'm going to contribute, so who will be buying the cake for the tired mums and dads?
I've recruited a small group of trusted people who I know, around the UK, who will seek out knackered looking mums and dads and treat them to a cake or coffee. So far, we have people in Exeter, Bristol, Cardiff, London, Cheshire and Leeds. But I'm on the case, widening it to NE England and around Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland.

This all sounds a bit middle-class, if you ask me. Why are you worrying about buying cake for people when there are some parents who are struggling and have to rely on food banks to feed their families?
This isn't intended to help just middle class mums - you don't have to own a Bugaboo to be bought a brownie. I believe that small random acts of kindness are important, no matter who you are or what your income is. But if you can, I wholeheartedly encourage you to regularly donate to your local food bank.

How much should I contribute?
As much or as little as you'd like! Just a couple of pounds will help put a smile on an exhausted parent's face. Or donate more if you'd like to lift the spirits of a few mums and dads.
