A group of us are participating in the Evening Echo Women's Mini Marathon in Cork on the 16th of September. We have over 15 of us take part in this and we have men dressing up as women as well!
The reason we're doing this for Tick Talk Ireland is because a member of our family is currently battling Lyme Disease and we want to spread awareness of it further to make people aware the importance of it going forward. Pleas see Katie's story below. We would be very grateful for any donations given and if anyone could also share this we would really appreciate it also.
My name is Katie I’m 16 years old. For a while now I’ve been sick. It all started when I was 12/13, I noticed that my energy was no where near as good as it should be. I was a very active girl playing camogie, football, badminton. I got severe joint pain and my energy levels weren’t good so I’d to give everything up.
When I was 14/15 I was constantly sick and constantly fainting. I couldn’t attend full days of school. I didn’t know what was wrong with me. I went to different GP’s and consultants, they said I had M.E. (Chronic fatigue syndrome).They started to question if it was a mental health issue asking if I was eating properly and putting me on weighing scales constantly.
Eventually after a long haul my mom and dad heard of a lab in Germany which we sent my bloods to and it showed chronic Lyme Disease. finally a proper diagnosis. I’m now attending a consultant in Dublin and I’m on a six month course of antibiotics and probiotics.
I have a long road ahead of me but I’m grateful for any improvement. I’m so relieved to get a proper diagnosis after being in the dark for so many years.
My purpose in writing this is to raise awareness for lyme disease and recognise symptoms at early stages of lyme disease because the first two months are so important for antibiotics after contracting lyme disease from a tick bite.
