Thu Duc Orphanage

The purpose of this Go Fund Me page is to raise funds for an orphanage in Vienam. It is only one of many children's homes in a country that has over 90,000 orphans.
Our soon-to-be little boy is currently living in the Thu Duc Children's Village (orphanage) in Saigon. We hope to travel very soon to adopt him and bring him back with us to Greystones.
The Thu Duc Orphanage was founded in 1990 by the grand daughter of Pablo Picasso, and was funded by her inheritance from her grandfather. The orphanage is still frequently referred to as the Picasso Orphanage even though the Picasso family no longer support it and instead is run and funded by the Communist State of Vietnam.
The Picasso orphanage did not fit the gray image of state-run homes. Picasso's grandaughter wanted it to be more than just a shelter. She wanted each child to have a family headed by a mother - a single Vietnamese woman chosen from the ranks of teachers - and a chance to make something of their lives. The rules were designed to keep the young families together.
Orphans, for instance, couldnt be adopted out at that time, and the house mothers took a vow not to marry for 5-10 years. Each one had as many as 10 children in their care.
Times have changed since the state took over. The funds that were available to run the orphanage and make it a happy place to be have run dry. The orphanage now relies on the meagre sums of money the state offers and whatever donations it receives from the public.
The donations that I receive from this page and any other sources will be used to buy essential goods for the orphanage e.g. baby food, formula, nappies, cooking/laundry equipment, rice, paper, pencils, toys and anything else we feel they could do with. We will not be giving them cash as we cannot account for how this will be used. Instead all goods will be bought in local shops.
