The H.U.B.B. (Help Us Become Better) Community Empowerment Center (located at 135 Prince Street) has helped the citizens of Newark, NJ for the past nine years. It is a facility that not only caters to youth, but to the entire community, no matter the age or situation. Founder and CEO of The H.U.B.B. and FP YouthOutCry, Al-Tariq Best, has continuously put his heart and soul into building a place of comfort and safety. Education is important at the H.U.B.B. We make sure our youth understand the importance to do well in school. The HUBB S.T.A.R.S. After School Enrichment Program allows children and young adults to come to a welcoming place for homework assistance, as well as financial literacy, grooming and self efficacy, empowerment, career building and more. We provide them with a healthy snack and a small meal for nourishment. We feel that it is important to teach children about the correlation between proper nutrition and academic excellence. In order for us to sustain, The H.U.B.B. needs help providing nutritious meals Monday through Friday from 4pm- 8pm.
A Violence Reduction and Grade Improvement Extended Day Initiative (7:30pm to 9pm) will be offered beginning January 2016. We pledge to keep our youth safe at The H.U.B.B. and send them home ready for bath, bed and beyond…helping our youth dream again. Internship and volunteer opportunities are available at the Village that Helps Us Become Better. One of the greatest joys in our community are the children. The H.U.B.B. has many annual events and activities that caters to the imagination and well-being of youth. The H.U.B.B. has Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Kwanzaa events, Healthy Olympics, cookoff competitions, camping trips, and other fun activities to give them a brighter future and to take them out of their everyday element, even if its just for a little while.
Summer is our champion time for fun! We offer summer camps which culminate into our Health Olympics - involving all five wards of the city. Our youth are able to escape their neighborhoods and take camping trips, learn cooking skills, arts and crafts, recreational play outdoors, and a safe outdoor environment. While most children only get the chance to meet their peers and neighbors in their particular ward, the summer programs have proven to be great ways for them to get to know one another and build healthy, friendly relationships.
Al-Tariq Best's vision is to make all youth safe and give them a chance to be a child. His vision is The H.U.B.B. Community Empowerment Center - an amazing facility that offers so much, but we need your help. There is no donation too small or too large. Each precious youth that enters through the doors of The H.U.B.B. is one less life we will read about being gunned down in the City of Newark. We are a great community, and a great place to grow.
