Teaching English in Romania

Hi everyone! 

My name is Maris and I'm a first-year Journalism and Government & Politics student at the University of Maryland. In my short time of college so far, I've been lucky enough to study what I'm passionate about and pursue what I want to do in the future.

This summer, I am going on a volunteer trip to Romania with a non-profit, Learning Enterprises, to teach English to young children. The trip combines some of my biggest passions: experiencing new communities and cultures, working with children, and community service.

I am incredibly excited about the trip because I will be living with a host family for seven weeks and teaching English in a small town, completely immersed in the culture, practices, and lifestyle of the Romanian community I’m assigned to! While the program charges no fee to participate and provides housing for its volunteers, there is still some financial strain on my ability to travel -- the biggest being the cost of airfare. Therefore, I am attempting to raise $1,000 in order to cover the costs of airfare and to fundraise towards Learning Enterprises’ programming.

Teaching English in Romania offers me a once-in-a-lifetime global experience to see a different corner of the world while simultaneously causing small ripples of change within it.
