Brecon Park Play Structure
Donation protected
Our son, Donavon, wrote an opinion piece in his classroom in 3rd grade. The topic of his opinion writing was that a play structure should be added to Brecon Park. Donavon is now in 4th grade and is still working hard to raise enough money to fund a play structure for Brecon Park in Saline.
The park is currently used by many families. Most of them visit the baseball field in the park. It is a beautiful space with a new walking path, but no modern play structure. It does have some old metal equipment (a slide and a merry-go-round).
In 2014, Donavon shared his opinion in a letter to the mayor. Not only did the mayor write back to him, but he also visited his classroom. The mayor agreed that the park could use a play structure "when the funds are available". That inspired Donavon to begin fundraising for a play structure.
Donavon has been researching the cost of commercial play structures, which can be about $50,000 with the necessary safe play surface installed under the structure.
Donavon's Fundraising Efforts So Far:
Go Fund Me page for donations from family and friends
100 letters to local businesses
Presentations to City Council
Worked with Parks Director to earn a CARES grant
Presentations to the City Parks Commission
Fire House Friday with W4 Country (2015 & 2016)
School presentations to children in his classes
Interviews with local news papers
Letters to play structure companies
The Brecon Play Structure Fund currently has a little over $34,000 toward the park between a CARES grant, a contribution from the city and Donavon's fundraising efforts.
We started this page as a way to organize any donations he can collect to raise money for the play structure. If you prefer to donate directly to the city fund, checks can be made out to Brecon Park Play Structure Fundraiser and can be mailed to Saline City Hall.
We are proud of our youngest citizen and his eagerness to help our community! This is evidence of the power of writing with a purpose. We are grateful for his teachers who guide him, inspire him and challenge him as a young writer.
If you would like to contribute to his project, Donavon and the other children who visit Brecon Park in the future will be grateful!
