Tambourine Army

The Tambourine Army is a social justice movement that was formed out of an urgent need to advocate differently for the rights of women and girls in Jamaica. The recent spate of violence against women and girls since December 2016 has made us fully aware that this is a tipping point in Jamaica’s history; and the Tambourine Army was formed to seize that moment. It was important for us to seize that moment and radically change how we practise advocacy, given many of the founding members have been involved in various social justice initiatives over the years in a collaborative and programmatic manner with only incremental improvements. Sadly, this has not significantly shifted the negative attitude towards the humanity of our women and girls.

The Tambourine Army was formed by eight women who are advocates in their own right, and work in diverse professional fields, namely human rights and gender-based advocacy, youth development, entertainment, film and photography, academia, development planning and management, spirit-centred healing, security, project management, education, social work, and Cyberactivism. We are a survivor-centred, action-based, results-based movement, committed to justice, healing and empowerment for survivors, changing cultural attitudes towards sexual violence, and removing the scourge of sexual abuse, rape and all other forms of violence against women and girls.

The Tambourine Army is guided by five strategic objectives, which will inform all activities and initiatives to be undertaken by the movement:

1.     Provide multi-sectoral support and alternative healing spaces for survivors of sexual violence

2.     Reduce and eliminate sexual grooming of children

3.     Strengthen the capacity of state and community institutions and agencies to reduce sexual violence

4.     Positively change the public narrative about, and attitudes towards survivors of sexual violence

5.     Build the largest sustainable Jamaican coalition against sexual violence
