Talia's Project: Human Rights Awareness

Dear friends and family,

As the number of Holocaust survivors dwindles, we are at a time where we must seize the moment and learn from them so that we can teach future generations of the horrors of genocide and the Holocaust. As part of my efforts to raise awareness about the Holocaust and human rights, I am raising money for The Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center (HHREC)  whose mission is to educate others to learn from the importance of treating all people with respect and dignity. I learned about the HHREC when I was selected by my school to participate in their Human Rights Institute for middle school students. Your donation to the HHREC is important because this amazing organization helps us learn through education and encourages us all to be upstanders rather than bystanders.

I have been fortunate to meet and get to know Peter Somogyi, a Holocaust survivor from Hungary. When Peter was 11 years old he was deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Upon arrival to the camp, Dr. Josef Mengele, chose Peter and his twin brother for medical experiments and research. Click here to learn more about  Peter's story. In the coming months, I will use my experiences with Peter to explain his story so that I can better understand how we can all triumph over hatred and make the world a better place.

My efforts have been recognized in the press and by Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino who awarded me a proclamation naming December 6th, 2016 Talia Katzke Recognition Day  in honor of my efforts for which I am grateful.
