In these traumatic times President Donald Trump has terrorized immigrant communities with his “zero tolerance” immigration policy, leading to the separation of families and irreparable damage to vulnerable children and infants. The President has also called “for a complete and total shutdown of Muslims entering the U.S.”, hurting refugee and immigrant communities. His unconstitutional policy of the Muslim Ban, his call for deportations and building of a wall to rip apart undocumented families instills fear and trauma within our immigrant families and neighborhoods. Now more than ever, our communities need to stand in solidarity and protect one another against this inhumane administration.
The Sanctuary Mosque campaign will be an extension of California’s Sanctuary State movement to protect undocumented families from being separated. Muslims believe that their neighbors have rights and that they must stand in solidarity with those in great need, in fact that is the greatest of our principles. The Islamic faith states: “He who spends the night satiated while knowing that his next door neighbor is hungry does not truly believe in God”.
More than ever, Latinos and Muslims need to stand with undocumented families by starting with faith-based sanctuary spaces, to promote cultural change and create resources for undocumented communities to feel safe and supported.
