My name is Keith Edgell and I am the District 4 Commander for the Montana Highway Patrol in Billings, MT.
On Thursday, February 25th, 2016 Sgt. John (Buck) O'Neill suffered a massive bleed on the brain from a tumor while enjoying some vacation time at home. Sgt. O'Neill's wife, Bonnie, called me in the late afternoon and advised me that Buck had collapsed and that they were at the Billings Clinic Emergency Room. Bonnie was very distraughtt and stated that the doctors were only giving him a 50/50 chance of surviving. Buck needed to undergo brain surgery to locate and stop the bleeding and also remove the pressure from the sitting blood.
It was a long night but Sgt. O'Neill did pull through the surgery and was then transported to the ICU. At the time of his writing (3/2) he still has not regained consciousness and is now battling pneumonia.
To the positive side he is responding to verbal commands while undergoing physical therapy and seems to recognize voices when people speak to him.
This is going to be a long and extended recovery and I am anticipating several months of intense physical therapy as this process continues.
To that end, the medical bills and family travel costs are quickly adding up. The intent of this "gofundme" page is to assist the family with off-setting these costs and thus reducing the stress and allowing them the ability to focus on Buck's needs and rehabilitation.
In speaking with his family there is no doubt that they are, and have been, extremely grateful for the little bit of assistance we have been able to provide to date.
