This year more than 4 million people have fled Syria and at least 7.6 million more are displaced within the country. The refugee crisis is said to be the worst since World War II.
Canada has pledged to take in 25,000 refugees by early next year.
To do our part in making this happen, we've formed a group made up of concerned families from across Toronto, 'New Root's'. We’ve joined 'the Ryerson Lifeline Syrian Refugee Challenge' and will be sponsoring a family. Ryerson, along with a host of other universities, has pledged to support approximately 300 refugees to resettle in Canada and will provide us, and other groups, with assistance and will oversee our finances.
As per government regulated sponsorship rules,
we’ll be helping our sponsored family with everything they need for their first year in Canada (or until they're self-sufficient), including arranging schooling for children, English lessons, setting up bank accounts, getting them health cards, helping them find employment to adjust and integrate into the community.
We also need to provide them with funds for all their necessities, as many of them will arrive with nothing. This includes: food, rent, furniture, clothing, transit and household items.
We need to raise $30,000 for this and we need help. Anything you can give will make a difference.
Note: Go Fund Me takes 5% of the donations as a fee. If you'd prefer to have 100% of your donation go to the familiy, or if you need a tax receipt, you can also donate on the Ryerson page at http://bit.ly/1OhDWM3
