The nuns of the Monasterio de Santa Clara are selfless individuals who have devoted their lives to giving back to those who are in need. They live in the poverty-stricken district of Mexico City and are constantly in need of support in order to maintain the convent and support those in their community. After a recent robbery, the convent will not be able to sustain itself unless it receives outside help.
90 years ago my grandfather was left as an orphan at the doorsteps of this very same convent, and these nuns gave him an education, a strong sense of self, and the opportunity to start a new life in the United States. This convent gave my grandfather the chance to succeed, and because of that, I am able to enjoy the life that I lead. However, the demand of running a large convent is a huge burden, and these nuns work from 5:30AM (after morning mass) until 11PM. Many nuns cook all day long in order to make food that will be sold to help the convent maintain day-to-day operations, while the rest of the nuns raise the children that have been orphaned, are sick, or come from disadvantaged families.
I had not visited this convent for 17 years, but I had the opportunity to do so this summer, and I have never been so touched by the selflessness of so many individuals. I have had my struggles with the Catholic church, but I have seen the good that these nuns have done within their community and I am proof of the impact that they can have on future generations. I am fortunate enough to be in a position that I can give back to these women who have given my family everything, and am asking that if you are in a similar position, that you, too, may be able to directly help those who are in need.
