Support for Carries Adoption

Donation protected
Carrie is a single mother by choice who has decided to take a path into parenting that without a doubt comes with expected and unexpected hurt. Carrie has decided to adopt.

This is her heartbreaking yet wonderful story.

Over a year ago Carrie, after following her desire to become a parent, began the process to adopt a baby. As many know there are a lot of different avenues to adopt.
One of the least followed path is the one to adopt babies that are born ill. Carrie chose one of these babies. The birth mother was a homeless woman addicted to heroin which meant the baby would be born addicted as well.  Once the baby was born it would immediately need to start a slow wean from this horrible drug... a very painful process for such a little person.  With this in mind and also knowing the complications that could arise during pregnancy and birth, Carrie decided to move forward. She invested love, energy and time into creating a space for her new baby. She paid for the process of adopting (this is such an expensive process). She grew more and more excited as the time passed and it seemed that the baby was growing healthy and strong. Carrie made plans to travel to Florida for the birth and made plans to bring her baby home with her. She became more and more emotionally attached just as if she were carrying her baby herself.

Unfortunately, towards the end of her pregnancy, the birth mother did not attend her final prenatal visits and did not show up for her planned cesarean mid July. She later hemorrhaged and had the baby by way of emergency cesarean. The baby girl was life-flighted to the neo-natal intensive care unit (NICU) at St. Josephs Women’s Hospital in Tampa.  Carrie was advised to stay in D.C. but she could not.  She flew to Florida immediately.

The baby had apparently aspirated the mother’s blood and had been without oxygen for some undetermined time but seemed responsive to stimuli.  She had lots of issues including pulmonary hypertension, malfunctioning organs, as well as the mother’s addiction.

Carrie tirelessly stayed by her side.

At first it seemed like she would be lost right away.   She had, in fact, coded three times already.  She seemed to be stable but was on a respirator and many, many drips to combat all her issues.  Carrie’s first positive information came after she had a relatively good Tuesday night and on Wednesday morning the doctor gave Carrie some hope that the baby girl would survive. But overnight she coded again and the next morning the doctor withdrew her optimism and was concerned that the cumulative damage was irreversible.   An EEG later that day showed that there was no significant brain activity so the doctor said that baby girl was no longer contributing anything to her own survival.  They needed to remove the respirator and allow the baby to pass away.

Carrie had her baptized and she held her as she passed away 13 days after she was born.

Carrie could have walked away from that baby. She didn't even have to travel to Florida. But she was her mother-  even though the adoption papers were not signed- she knew where she should be.

After all of the heartache and no reimbursement from her first adoption,  Carrie decided to adopt again.
Again to help a baby that might not have a chance and again a baby that would be born addicted and again an adoption in Florida.

And here is the wonderful part of the story...

We are happy to share that Carrie is now the proud mother of a little boy born last week. 48 agonizing hours after he was born he legally became Carrie's son. He is slowly weaning off of his birth mother's addiction and he is fighting hard to become stronger each day. He is being given proper medical attention and lots of well needed love. Carrie will be staying with her by her little boys side in Florida helping him grow and recover.

First, we ask for your prayers. Adoption and becoming a new mother is not simple or easy, and we hope you will pray for Carrie and her baby as they embark on this journey together. Please also pray for the birth mom.

Second, if you feel led to help financially please consider a small contribution.

These funds will be used to cover Carrie's expenses of her first non reimbursed adoption, the current adoption fees, her travels to Florida for the first adoption, her (second) travels to Florida for her baby boys adoption, her time there as the baby weans off of methadone, access to breast milk through a milk bank, in home support, baby items and much more.

Many thanks!

From the friends of Carrie and her little {strong} baby boy
