On March 26, 2019, ICE arrested Wayzaro Walton at her ankle monitor check-in in Hartford CT. They immediately transferred her to immigration detention in Massachusetts, where she’s been jailed since. Her 15-year-old daughter, Azaiyah, and her wife, Tamika, were suddenly left alone at home, devastated. Making ends meet on one income has become challenging and they need our support! Please contribute what you can to help toward rent and bills, and to avoid even greater struggle for this amazing family.
Background:
Before being snatched from our community, Wayzaro had been complying with ICE and checking in with ISAP (ankle monitor contractor) every other week for months. She had been hopeful for a positive outcome on her immigration case, based on having recently received a full and absolute pardon from the state of Connecticut. Without a criminal record, there should no longer have been a basis for her deportation.
Instead, ICE decided to challenge the validity of the Connecticut pardon process, still deeming her deportable. They claim her pardon doesn’t have the necessary power because it’s not signed by the Governor himself.
CT Governor Ned Lamont and Attorney General William Tong have voiced their support for Wayzaro, saying ICE is misinterpreting CT law and demanding they respect the CT pardon process and release Wayzaro from detention. She has also received strong support from Senator Richard Blumenthal and Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin.
On April 8th, 2019, the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals granted Wayzaro a temporary stay of removal, and requested to be briefed on the matter of the pardon. Now, more than ever, she should be able to continue to fight her case alongside her family, at home in Hartford.
ICE terrorizes our people and separates our families. We are standing as a community, with her family, to defend and protect Wayzaro. We will not stop until she can live without fear with her loved ones here in Hartford.
