Old Fort Residents

Donation protected
On September 30, 2018 the residents of Old Fort were victim to a landslide that blocked the only road access to the community.  Within' days the slide left 57 residential homes without power and in turn, no access to  water.  An evacuation order was issued and residents had only hours to gather what they could and leave their homes.  For the residents of Old Fort there is so many unknowns.   They haven't been told if they will be able to go back within' a month, a year, or if this landslide will mean leaving the Old Fort indefinitely.

Many of the residents are happy to be safe with a temporary roof over their heads.   But due to the unknown, hotels are basically their only options for compensation, as renting a home falls under long term emergency plans.

I have talked with a few residents who are worried about how they are going to be able to keep up financially, not knowing if insurance will cover any of the damages that already exist since the slide.  Some residents are already talking about the possibility of bankruptcy.

The residents have so much uncertainty about what their future looks like right now, finances should not have to be an additional worry.

We want to be able to help relieve some financial burden to any of the residents whom may be in need. Whether it be to help in replacing damaged goods once the residents are able to go home.  Clean up, maybe a flight that someone needs but can't financially justify at the moment.  Or maybe just maybe, we are able to help someone, or a family save their home, save their livelihood, everything they have worked so hard for.

I have been to the Old Fort since the slide. Even if these residents are able to safely return home in the near future, there is a lot of work ahead of them before they will be able to be where they were at before the slide, before they will once again be able to consider their houses a home.

Let's come together as the community and  the proud Canadians we are and help the residents of Old Fort. Thus being able to re-build, and sustain their lives, and their beautiful community. That right now is in such uncertainty.

It's now time for an update and to get these funds to the residents.  The royal Bank of Canada has offered to issue drafts at no charge.  I have put together an application for the homeowners of the Old Fort.  They can be picked up at Alpha Controls between 8-12, 1-3 Monday- Friday, located at 7819 93rd St, Fort St. John, BC, or applications can be emailed.  Application deadline will be June 28, 2019.  At this time the money will be equally dispersed among applications.   In leu of receiving the money, homeowners can opt to have their portion of the funds directed to the Geisbrechts, whose property suffered the worst damages.  Residents with inquiries will have access to the number of applicants and the amount of money issued to insure the amount in full is paid out as intended.  For residents wanting an emailed copy of the application, please email Patty at [email redacted].  For more information please contact Kristi [email redacted]
