Superior Police Department K-9

Donation protected
The Town of Superior is a small mining community in the copper basin area of Arizona. The Police Department consists of 6 full time Police Officers, a Commander, a Chief of Police and 10 Reserve Police Officers. The town is split by Highway 60 and is the only major thoroughfare to and from the Phoenix metropolitan area and the nearby San Carlos Indian Reservation.

Due to the location, the town is subject to a high number of vehicles transporting illegal narcotics to and through the town. Low police staffing and the lack of tactical support such as a narcotics K-9 makes interdiction of these crimes very difficult.

In December 2016, The Superior Police Department was given an opportunity to purchase K-9 Rex. Rex was purchased almost entirely on donated funds from local businesses and RICO funds. Due to the department's low budget, we are unable to purchase much of the required equipment necessary to run a successful K-9 program.

Currently, the department is utilizing a patrol vehicle with almost 100,000 miles. The vehicle is not equipped with a rear K-9 cage and also has no rear air conditioning, which poses a significant concern especially during the summer months. The department is also utilizing second hand equipment donated from other police agencies.

The Superior Police Department is desperately trying to raise enough money to purchase a new vehicle that can be outfitted and utilized exclusively as a K-9 vehicle, as well as any future equipment that will be needed to train and work K-9 Rex.
