Stumblingbear's Bernie Travel Fund

On April 3, 2016, some truly amazing candidates were elected in Kansas' 2nd Congressional District to represent Bernie Sanders at the Democratic National Convention on July 25-28, 2016.

I was lucky enough to be in attendance.

As a transplanted Vermonter, who grew up with Bernie Sanders as the mayor of Burlington, I was overwhelmed by how the stories of the chosen candidates so completely reflect Bernie's vision for this country.

Most of the candidates that stood, expressed that this was their first time being involved with a political campaign beyond voting. Attending the National Convention is not cheap. As Bernie's campaign has highlighted, participation in our political system favors those with an abundance of available resources. The success of Bernie's campaign is due in large part to donors helping the message get out. In that spirit, I urge you to offer your support for one of our phenomenal delegates who would not otherwise have the resources to attend the convention.

Dustin Stumblingbear is a twice-wounded Iraqi war veteran.  He is also a direct beneficiary of legislation championed by Sen. Sanders to improve veterans' access to timely health care.

In his own words, Mr. Stumblingbear states:

"I am a member of the Kiowa Tribe and a veteran of the Iraq War. I deployed to Iraq in 2004 and 2007. My unit’s mission was to patrol roads in Iraq searching for improvised explosive devices and clearing those devices when found. I was injured during both of my tours. Mental and physical therapy were difficult to access on a regular basis due to a lack of proper funding for the VA.

I have experienced acts of racism from my fellow citizens, and from the police across America. Senator Sanders is willing to have frank discussions concerning racial inequality in America. Senator Sanders fights for equality for all Americans. For these reasons, and others, I stand in support of Senator Bernie Sanders, and his campaign for President of the United States.

I have been selected by my fellow Kansas Democrats to attend the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. I will stand and cast my vote for Senator Bernie Sanders. I believe that my perspective and life experiences will be useful in helping to shape the Democratic platform to better serve more Americans. Democracy is just not about belief but it includes participation. I will participate on behalf of First Nations people, veterans, and all Americans. I am asking for any financial support you are able to give. I thank you for your support."

Again, I urge you to help Dustin participate in a process that, in many ways, is only accessible to those with an abundance of resources at their disposal. Help Kansas be heard!
