Everyone often talks about taking a chance in life, so in 2017 I decided to fulfill my life long dream of becoming a nurse!  I applied for and was accepted onto the BSc Adult Nursing Programme at Queens University in Belfast. Becoming a nurse for me is not only in my genes (thanks Mom ;) but also something I am passionate about. I'm due to graduate in July 2020 and for my final year, I was selected to participate in an international clinical placement in Tanzania, East Africa.

This February, I will embark on this life-changing opportunity for four weeks. I will be working at Mwanayamala Hospital in Dar Es Salam, where I will be focusing on antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal and neonatal care of women and infants, which is the area I plan to focus my career in. Africa has a significantly higher proportion of maternal and child mortality. This is due to a lack of medical supplies/resources, high incidence of life threatening diseases, an inadequate healthcare system and increasing poverty levels.

Being able to participate in this voluntary post is something I never thought would be possible! I have funded this trip entirely on my own by working night shifts at the Ulster hospital, as I have limited resources as a full-time student. However, I am really hoping to raise additional funds for Mwanayamala Hospital. I am asking for donations to purchase important medical supplies which will dramatically improve the healthcare of the hospital’s patients. I will purchase these supplies, with the money raised, once I'm in Tanzania so that I will know first hand which supplies will make the most difference.

I am committed to becoming the very best nurse I can be. Volunteering in Tanzania affords me the opportunity to work alongside local medical staff, exchanging mutually beneficial knowledge and experiences, while witnessing first-hand devastating circumstances and moments of pure joy. I hope to develop my leadership skills and improve my ability to deal with complex situations under pressure. Additionally, my experiences in Africa, will teach me how to think critically with limited resources and will give me insight into what it means to provide compassionate care to the most vulnerable people. Without a doubt, these skills which cannot be learnt from a textbook, will improve my practice when I return to work in Northern Ireland.

I welcome the opportunity to discuss my trip with anyone who is interested. Thank you in advance for any amount of donation you are able to contribute.

With gratitude,

Kylie
