My dad, Stephen Hendershot, thought he had plenty of time to fulfill his lifelong dream of visiting the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C. He's a Vietnam combat vet who lost many friends in Vietnam. But he's been diagnosed with Liver Cancer, and we don't have the money to go. Please help his dream come true!! -Nathan Hendershot
(Mom's turn...lol). Steve was diagnosed with hepatacellular carcinoma on May 24, 2018. He is on systemic chemotherapy, as other treatment options are not possible. Unfortunately, he has an aggressive form of cancer with a rapid rate of growth. His largest tumor has doubled in size in the last 2 months, even with chemotherapy. This is terminal, and the hope is that the chemo he is getting will extend his life by a few months.
Steve has always been proud of his Veteran status and has been involved with Veteran support groups throughout his life. He served as Post Commander for VFW #9929 in West Hartford, Ct - working his way up the ranks to get there.
Stephen is retired, with only his Social Security income and my income from 2 jobs to support his 14 year old son Nathan and myself. With the increase in medical expenses we've had already, however, we have no extra money for a trip to D.C. Nathan came up with the idea of creating a GoFundMe page. He wants to make his dad's lifelong dream come true. With Steve's ok, I'm sending out this plea. I'm asking for enough money to pay for a flight, hotel room for 3 days, car rental and other trip expenses. We will need to take the shortest and most comfortable means of getting there, as Steve is in excruciating pain, and it's difficult for him to walk (or do anything, really). Time is of the essence as his health is rapidly declining. We hope to travel before the end of August, before travel will become impossible for him.
Any and all donations will be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! Any funds not used for travel will be applied to medical bills and final expenses.
