Sports for Syrian Refugees

Donation protected
Dear Family and Friends,

My name is Yahya Abou-Ghazala and I'm currently a second year at the University of Virginia from Fairfax, Virginia. This May, I will be traveling to a Syrian refugee camp in Bekaa, Lebanon in order to help set up a sports center and distribute sports equipment to children of all ages. I am currently working with the Northern Virginia Refugee Fund and SAWA for Development and Aid to provide the children of the camp with the resources to express themselves through a variety of sports and activities.

I'm looking to raise money to buy sports equipment from Lebanense vendors and distribute it to the children. I plan to buy the below for the kids:

-Balls
-Sports shoes/cleats
-Cones
-Athletic wear (shirts, shorts, etc).
-Pinnies
-Small goals
-Games

The money will be withdrawn and I plan on purchasing sports equipment that will help support these displaced children.
In addition to what is going to be purchased, I will also be taking equipment collected from UVA and the local mosque and schools.

Even the smallest donation will make a difference and will be deeply appreciated! Thank you so much for your support.

Why does this mean so much to me?

I'm a Syrian-American that grew up with soccer, and it continues to be a central part of my life today. I feel a personal connection to the Syrian refugee children that don't have the means to express themselves through sports.  As a child, I was fortunate to have the resources and access to play soccer competitively. This was an experience unlike any other and has contributed heavily to the person I am today. I believe that sports should be a part of every childhood, and the sad reality is that many refugees are missing out on the joys of sports.

I know how important sports and physical activity are for children—they provide an escape from the realities and stresses of everyday life. Of its total population of 391,000 refugees, 39.5% of the population of the camp in Bekaa, Lebanon are children that fall between 5-17 years old. I want to be able to make a difference in the daily life of these children by providing them with the means to be able to express themselves in a postive manner, while also providing them with the escape they are in desperate need of.

Thank you!
