Spartan Snack Pack

1 in 5 kids across the nation struggle with food insecurity. Ohio ranks 3rd in the nation for food insecurity and Summit county alone has over 27,000 kids with food insecurity. As a mom, to me, 1 child going hungry is 1 to many. That's why I started Spartan Snack Pack for Springfield Local Schools in Akron. We send food home on the weekend with kids who might not otherwise have food until they return to school on Monday. Sometimes school breakfasts and lunches are the only food they eat. My original goal when I started this program was 2 schools with 25 kids in each. Our first backpacks went home the first Friday in Dec 2017 as of April 1st 2018 we are sending 115 backpacks out to 5 different schools. The short term benefits of programs like this are fewer visits to the school nurses, fewer behavior referrals, and fewer social service referrals. The long term benefits are less absenteeism, and higher test scores and grades. We started working with the Akron Canton Regional Food Bank in February which has reduced our costs tremendously, but there are still kids who need this program but we simply don't have the funds to expand any further. That is where you come in. We need your help to sustain and expand this program. Your donation will go a long way at the food bank and help so many kids.
