Rachel Rubeor  LUBEC, ME
Lubec Landmarks, Inc., a 501c3 non-profit, is raising funds to restore the McCurdy's Smokehouse Brining Shed.  The Brining Shed, part of the McCurdy Smokehouse complex (the last operating smoke herring processing facility in the United States) is the last building in the complex to be restored.  Severe damage to the building occured during the last winter storm which has required Lubec Landmarks to seek emergency funds to repair and stablize the brining shed so that future restoration work can continue.

The McCurdy Smokehouse Complex (located in the fishing village of Lubec, Maine) has be on the National Register of Historic Sites since 1993.  As stewards of this collection of five buildings, Lubec Landmarks goal is to restore and stabilize these buildings which make up an integral part of our town's historic waterfront as well as keep the story of the process of smoked herring alive through guided tours and talks every summer.

Lubec Landmarks is currently seeking emergency funds of $125,000 to fix a collapsed wall on the brining shed as well as to restabilize the pier supports that the shed rests on.  The repairs will allow Lubec Landmarks to keep the brining shed secure while more extensive restoration procedures are implemented to bring the building to it's former glory, which will end in adding the brining shed to the McCurdy's Smokehouse Museum.

The Board Members, staff and volutneers of Lubec Landmarks/McCurdy Smokehouse Museum would like to thank you all for your support in helping us save this important piece of our town's history.

I have brought many visitors to Lubec and they have all thoroughly enjoyed the tours and glimpse of history provided by Lubec Landmarks. Preserving our history is a very worthy investment.
