Water Borehole Project for Cerebral Palsy Centre

Donation protected
SKTVUK are working together with GENCA Consultancy on an upcoming project in Kilifi. a town in the coastal region of Kenya. With the opening of a centre dedicated to kids suffering from cerebral palsy, we’re looking to fund for the borehole water project for the centre.

The people in this area, especially in the Bahari constituency’s administrative wards, have developed a negative myth and are ignorant towards the cerebral palsy affected community members. This has resulted to them locked in dark rooms to avoid shame. Therefore, they have no medical attention given to them, no access to education and food is not guaranteed for them. This initiative is focused to develop a campaign towards the communities to empower them on the basic rights of such people through deliberations on the best practice and care for them that need it.

One of the first steps of this project is to create a water supply to ensure that building work can begin. This will not only help start the project but will also play a crucial role in running the facilities. SKTVUK have agreed and taken responsibility to fundraise towards digging the borehole to ensure that the centre has access to safe clean water. The target we have to meet is £1200 for the borehole. Any additional amounts fundraised will go towards the completion of the centre.

Globally, at least 2 billion people use a drinking water source contaminated with faeces. Contaminated water can transmit diseases such diarrhoea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid, and polio (World Health Organisation). It can be difficult to get access to safe and clean water in certain areas of Kilifi. The borehole project also means that the Kilifi Cerebral Palsy Centre is able to have access readily and not have to constantly leave the area in search of water. This not only allows easy access to safe water to drink, cook with and clean but also ensures effective running of the centre itself, impacting hundreds of lives in the process. Better water sources also mean less expenditure on health, as people are less likely to fall ill and incur medical costs, and are better able to remain economically productive.

The opening of centre will not only help the 200+ kids suffering from cerebral palsy but will also offer more job opportunities to the vast majority of the jobless youth within the area, making a big difference to the people of Kilifi, Kenya.

Together let’s make a difference to people's lives #SKTVUKFamily

INTRODUCTION

Cerebral palsy (CP) is an umbrella term encompassing a group of non-progressive, non-contagious motor conditions that cause physical disability in human development, chiefly in the various areas of body movement. Cerebral refers to the cerebrum, which is the affected area of the brain (although the disorder most likely involves connections between the cortex and other parts of the brain such as the cerebellum), and palsy refers to disorder of movement.

Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the motor control centers of the developing brain and can occur during pregnancy, during childbirth or after birth up to about age three. Resulting limits in movement and posture cause activity limitation and are often accompanied by disturbances of sensation, depth perception and other sight-based perceptual problems, communication ability, impairments can also be found in cognition; and epilepsy is found in 1/3. CP, no matter what the type, is often accompanied by secondary musculoskeletal problems that arise as a result of the underlying etiology.

KEY PUSHING FACTORS FOR THE PROJECT. (PROBLEM STATEMENT IN BRIEF)

The presence of the cerebral palsy affected people both at local ward and county at large is the main of objective creating need to prospect for such a project. This is by fact that:

·       The people in this area especially in the Bahari constituency’s administrative wards are full of ignorance and have developed a negative myth, negative attitudes towards the cerebral palsy affected community members. This has resulted to no medical attention for them, locked in dark rooms to avoid shame, no accesses to education and worse of them they are not guaranteed food!

This initiative is focused to develop a campaign towards the communities to empower them on the basic rights of such people through deliberations on the best practice and care for such people.

·       Access to medical services, care centers and tapping on talents.

By the fact that at both Kilifi North and South constituencies there are only 2 main facilities which deal with CP cases, besides one main at coast regional level in Mombasa County.

Firstly, people in Mnarani and Kilifi at general are not able to access such facilities due to the vastness of the location both at North and South of this County. Thus therefore the CP’s affected individuals left for the mercy of the almighty.  Hence with this initiative tend to ease the access to basic services and suitably make the facility available for those within Bahari Constituency and the larger County.

Kilifi constituents having been as well categorized to live under the US DOLLAR per day has generally demotivated the families of the CP victims to seek for the expensive medical services in these few facilities, besides struggling for food as they are facing biting poverty. Thus the initiative tend to work closely with the well-wishers from the local communities, County, Country and continent at large in helping them.

It was an expectation that the devolution system would have focus on such groups but it was unfortunately that the main focus has been on infrastructure rather to the welfare of the people hence such CP victims not only ignored but forgotten at all.

The initiative is focused on tapping on untapped talents of these individuals as it is on record of their abilities in a number of activities. This is directed to enable them to be more creative and become self-sustained. As well to send a key not to the community of their ability thus as well commanding cooperation and respect.

·       Suitability.

In a mission towards the global sustainable objective. This initiative is focused on developing income generating activities besides creating opportunities for the people of mnarani.

The intended activities are focused to engage the parents of the CP affected children not only as community contribution towards the larger program rather enable them sustain themselves and the CP victims.

·       Partnerships and collaborations.

In making this initiative a success, we are focused to work closely Kenya Medical Research Institute KEMRI basing on medical professionalism, Pwani University through the psychology and education department for their professionalism in those respective areas. As well Kilifi Medical Training College through their physiotherapy department and others. This is due to their resourcefulness in medical and research areas.
