UChicago Urban Studies Summer 2K16

To Friends, Family, and those who will listen:

Earlier this spring I was fortunate enough to have been accepted into the University of Chicago’s Urban Studies Summer Session in which I will have the opportunity to further my ability to examine the social problems that plague our society. The program consists of two courses concentrating theoretically on urban issues as well as applying methodology to solving them, weekly observational learning seminars, panel discussions featuring guest faculty and speakers, an externship with a civic and community organization, and will conclude with a presentation of conducted research and findings. At the birthplace of modern day sociological research, the University of Chicago offers me the perfect setting to execute these goals as well as elevate me towards my aspirations of a doctorate degree after the conclusion of my undergraduate Sociology major at Macalester College.

Although I have been awarded a partial scholarship to cover a portion of the cost of tuition, there is still a sizeable amount remaining that is not covered by any form of financial aid. For this, I ask you humbly to lend me a hand. I struggled internally with the notion of creating a Go Fund Me as I was unsure of how I would be perceived as a result. After much deliberation and reflection, I have decided that the importance of this opportunity is too great, and therefore have decided to ask for your assistance.

For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by the intersection of individual values, identities, and actions amidst the web of social structures and institutions that have propelled human existence for as long as time can remember. As creatures of the organism that is society we are bound by its rules, laws, and boundaries. Here, at our unique period in history, we are witnessing and experiencing great change at the mercy of rapid development and challenged ideologies. I am entrenched in the faults of our progression and the inequality that our civilization has amalgamated and I dream every day of a better world. While I understand that I may never live to see these necessary changes, I dream of making a positive impact at any level I can while working to eliminate that which holds us back collectively. And even here, in this small personal and monetary issue in comparison to much larger problems at hand, I recognize my privilege in being able to attend an institution such as the University of Chicago. Furthermore, the unique position I will be in; having the opportunity to network with such a supportive group of resourceful individuals. I don’t know if I have the answers. I don’t even know if I am the right person to be searching. What I do know is that I am determined to do whatever it takes to pursue a better tomorrow for my family, my friends, and our global community.

For those of you that know me, I am thankful to have you in my life. For those of you that don’t, I can’t wait to meet you. Thank you for your time and consideration of this request.
