In response to this story about Ms. Shanta Sweatt, a former coworker of hers wrote on Facebook, "I worked with Shanta at TPAC and I don't think I ever saw her without a smile on her face. She was absolutely one of the hardest working people in that company and took pride in her work. I hate to learn she had to go through so much, but so glad to see she has made it through. Hope her story can make a difference."

Shanta Sweatt embodies perserverence, joy, and hard work.  The Atlantic’s piece,  “Innocence Is Irrelevant,” offered a glimpse into some of the struggles Shanta has faced.  The photo taken of Shanta and her boys for The Atlantic was the very first family photo they have ever taken.  Her boys are, at this point, young men.  She was overjoyed to have the photo taken and to receive a copy.  Shanta has an amazing ability to focus on the positive.

Shanta puts her sons first.  She always helps others before she helps herself.  And she does it all with a smile.  When approached about sharing her story nationally, her hope was that through sharing her story she could help others.

This GoFundMe has been started for Shanta in effort to provide her a light at the end of the tunnel, to help her out of the extended stay motel, and to return a fraction of the joy and help she has provided to others along the way - without ever expecting anything in return.

As soon as Shanta was charged (before ever being convicted) she was evicted from the government housing she had lived in for 10 years.  With nowhere to go, she lost most of her belongings as well.  She could not afford to store them and pay weekly rent at the motel.  With this money, she can make a deposit on an apartment and be reunited with her sons - somewhere safe.  She can buy the necessities that come with moving into a new place.  She can begin to pay down the court costs that have suspended her driver's license and caused her to rely on the inefficient bus system in Nashville (needing to live near to a bus line has also severely limited her housing options).  It is no understatement to say that each donation is really and truly changing not only Shanta's life, but her boys' lives as well.
