In October I’m volunteering at Baphumelele, a children's home in Khayelitsha, near Cape Town. During this time I will be assisting care workers, teachers and qualified nurses with a wide range of tasks, including but not limited to developmental play, social education, and respite care for the younger children. I will not only be involved in aiding within the home but also to facilitate a healthy environment in which these underprivileged children can develop ways to manage schooling and study. This, along with supporting a wide range of educational activities will help to empower the growing community and allow me to do my part to reduce the cycle of poverty where I am able.
A story which resided with me personally and why I chose to assist this particular community is that of Rosie. In 1989, Rosie, a trained primary school teacher, moved from the Eastern Cape to Khayelitsha near Cape Town. She was disturbed to see young children going through the rubbish dump in search of food while their parents were away during the day, either at work or in search of work. She responded by taking children into her home, and together with a group of women from the community, began looking after these unsupervised children. After the first week, 36 children had joined their charge. Baphumelele now has up to 85 children in their care.
From these humble beginnings Baphumelele Educare Centre was founded, which today is an established community crèche and Grade R (preschool) caring for roughly 230 children aged three months to six years.
While the Educare Centre had developed a reputation for looking after children, Rosie also felt a calling to reach out to orphaned children in the community. To that end, Baphumelele Children’s Home was created as a place of safety for abandoned, abused, neglected or orphaned children from 0 to 18 years of age.
Alongside volunteering my own time at the orphanage for 4 weeks, I’m hoping to raise funds to make a direct donation to the children's home. These funds are to aid the school in delivering much needed education in order to stop the cycle of poverty in this community. This would come in the material form of school shoes, uniforms, educational toys, stationary and books. Alongside these requirements I am hoping to raise enough to also support the day to day challenges of providing basic human needs such as food for the children, nappies and hygiene products for as long as possible.
