Shaker High School FIRST Robotics, a team of 9th‐12th grade students who work together each year to design and build a complex 120‐pound robot. Shaker Robotics is an academic team dedicated to bringing science and technology not only to our members, but also to our community. As has been the case for the last 6 years, we are participating in the annual FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). A unique varsity Sport for the MindTM, FRC is designed to help high‐school‐aged young people discover how interesting and rewarding the lives of engineers and scientists can be. Throughout the year our team members develop their mechanical, computer, and electrical skills; engage in public speaking, practice time management; and build their work ethic.

Because this challenging endeavor requires considerable funding, we hope that you will support the team with a tax‐deductible donation.

Building a robot is a challenging and time‐intensive undertaking, but absolutely worth the effort and time! Besides being a fun STEM‐focused learning experience, it is an excellent opportunity for students, professionals and supporters to partner in support of the youth who will grow to become the much‐needed engineers and technicians of tomorrow’s labor pool. Participation in robotics exposes students to careers in science, technology, engineering, and math that they might not have considered otherwise, and arms them with knowledge and confidence that leaves them more prepared to pursue challenging careers in this digital age.

Engineers and mentors from a variety of disciplines serve as advisors and role models, showing students how math, science, engineering and technology are used to solve problems in the real world. They employ and teach their own project management and idea creation skills, demonstrate the importance of teamwork, and teach students the importance of perseverance. FIRST Robotics benefits students involved in the team, but it also helps our sponsors with a tax deduction.

Our success in 2017 will be a result of community support. We would like to thank you in advance for your support of the Shaker High School FIRST Robotics team.

Sincerely,
The Shaker High School Robotics Team

Shaker High School FIRST Robotics Team 2791 competed at the New York Tech Valley Regional Competition held March 16-18, 2017 at the ECAV arena, located on the RPI campus. Shaker joined with teams from Quebec and Brooklyn to form an alliance that performed well throughout elimination matches and dominated in the final round, winning the competition. This win marks the team’s first regional championship since its inaugural year of 2009. Shaker Robotics is comprised of 55 student members and numerous dedicated mentors, including SHS instructors Brian Ashline, Garry Bottini, and Joel Scism. Several RPI student mentors, team alumni and parents also mentor the team.

“We made it a goal to do whatever it took to get the team to the championship this year and we did it,” said SHS technology teacher, Brian Ashline. “I am so proud of the team for all their hard work and commitment.”

The RPI event featured 36 high school teams from NY, MA, CT, SC, Quebec, Mumbai and Istanbul for three days of competition. Teams relied on their student-designed robots’ accuracy, speed, maneuverability, and design to successfully meet the rigorous objectives of this year’s SteamworksSM game challenge.

The team competes again at the New York City Regional on April 7-9, where they will try for a second regional championship. Their win on Saturday qualifies Team 2791 to compete at the national FIRST Championship in St. Louis, MO on April 26-29.

In addition to their regional title, the team was awarded the coveted Industrial Design Award, sponsored by General Motors. This award celebrates form and function in an efficiently designed machine that effectively addresses the game challenge.
