Seva Food Truck (Non Profit)

Seva Food Truck  is a charity initiative founded by the Sikh community, built for the greater good of all. We aim to tackle the issues of food insecurity and poverty burdening individuals in the greater community.

We aim to provide services to individuals and communities without judgment, stigma or discrimination, through dignity and respect. Our basic principle is to apply our Gurus' teachings of Seva (selfless service; altruism) and Langar (free kitchen; food served to all, regardless of race, religion, or any other sort of societal divisions) to the real world. Too often are these beautiful, global concepts confined to the basements of our Gurdwaras (Sikh temples).

We do not believe in imposing views, nor do we believe in proselytizing individuals, for these are not the teachings of our Gurus. We believe in humanity, community and the well-being of all. We, as Sikhs, believe that we needn't preach our values. We must let our actions speak.

Our Program:

"Pay It Forward" is a beautiful concept, and a simple one at that: to let one kind gesture follow another. We decided to take this concept to Spruce Avenue School, which is a low-income school in the inner city of Edmonton, Alberta.

The children that attend this school were at one time provided with a meal program supplemented by government funding. The children would receive both breakfast and lunch daily. This funding was then cut, leaving the school with the capacity to only feed their children breakfast, and not lunch. Being that the vast majority of the students at this school live below the poverty line, they were relying on this program quite heavily.

As we all know, it's hard to focus in class on an empty stomach. And so, what better place to take our Gurus' teachings of Seva and Langar? Not only do we provide the children with a meal, but we also engage with them in various ways, be it playing sports or having a good conversation. We wish to provide our friends at Spruce Avenue School with the mentorship that is so dearly needed at a young age, especially when you are at risk. Through leading by example, we aim to impart a strong sense of equality, compassion and social responsibility within our children, so they too can have the will to become proactive members of society.

Langar was meant to enhance the vitality of the individual and the community.

We run our program on a weekly basis, and the cost for each lunch is approximately $400. There are 4 weeks in a month and 9 months in a school year, which is how we arrived at our figure of $15,000.

Surplus donations will be put towards special events for the students, which would otherwise not be held for lack of school funding. Graduation, sports days, and mentorship programs are just a few such occasions that Seva Food Truck has planned. These events are another means to create a positive environment for the students, engaging them in healthy, enriching activities.

Thank you in advance for your consideration. We hope you will take this tremendous opportunity to lend a helping hand to the future of our communities!
